California failed at building a 'Mini-High-Speed' rail system, and Amtrak all too often has a 'Low-' to 'NO-speed' 'WELFARE' railway system that cost tax payers way too much to keep the failing / failed system afloat.

I rode Amtrack from SC to NJ once. The train stopped 1/2 way up and was stuck for 4 hours. They would not let anyone off the train.

People got hungry - some did not have cash to buy food, and Amtrak refused to feed any of their 'hostages'.

Disgraceful!

High speed rail would result in many more injuries and fatalities.

According to the DOT, there are around 5,800 train-car accidents. Most occur at railroad crossings. The results is around 2,300 injuries and just under 600 deaths. The overwhelming majority of those accidents happen on dry pavement, in clear weather and with functioning crossing lights. In other words, idiot drivers. And that is with our slow trains.
