The Miss America pageant WAS for decades, by rule a "white only" pageant, as was established in 1930, and remained that way until the first Black contestant was allowed in 1971.We only have ourselves to blame. When someone came up with a black beauty pageant, the answer should have been no unless we all agreed to have a white beauty pageant too, and maybe a brown one and red one as well. Of course that would be silly, divisive and wouldn't fly, but it would have shut down the idea that blacks need to have a contest just for themselves.
The FIRST Black MIss America was Vanessa Williams in 1984.
Since the pageant began in 1921, that means that 63 years passed before a Black contestant won, which proves the point that there was NO WAY for the majority of years that this contest has been in existence, would there have been an opportunity for equal participation by Black contestants.
So obviously, unless there was a "Black Pageant" to participate in, aspiring contestants who were not "White", had no other options of even having a chance to even compete, let alone wi.
