That sounds good but the reality is Ukraine needs fighters, tanks, and ground defensive systems and the required training and support. The US can't supply that without an a major escalation. No matter how much we want to help Ukraine stop Russia, we have to consider the consequences. The fact is Ukraine is not essential to the NATO alliance. There is lot more to be lost by the US than gained by an escalation.

If Ukraine can keep up the fighting, there will most likely be a negotiated settlement in which Putin can carry home a claim of victory and some part of the Ukraine can remained independent. Even if Russia captures Kiev and other major cities, the fighting will continue indefinitely requiring Russia to maintain a permeant military force in the country, certainly not the victory Russia sought.
