I went to university with lots of Iranians and most of them were no more religious than I was.

Contrary to popular opinion, the hijab is not required in most ME countries.

Examples are: Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Iraq.

It's not required by Islam nor by law in many countries where Islam is the state or majority religion but Islamic based traditions like the hajib are enforced, often violently, with gov'ts unable to protect women or turning a blind eye to the traditionalists.
The occasional attempts at liberalizing Islamic cultures in the Mideast are subject, as with Nina Moradi, to the whims of self-appointed religious police.
