Is Atheism Depressing?

And now let's look at the record of atheism.

Communist atheists in only 80 years killed about 94 million! And the number of deaths caused by atheism is much higher. An atheist, Stalin, along with his fellow Christian-hater Hitler started the worst war in human history. And don't forget all the deaths caused by right wing atheists like Mussolini, who was in part inspired by another blood-thirsty atheist Nietzsche. And don't forget the Armenian genocide, committed by secular fanatics: the Young Turks.

Please also remember that the austere atheist philosophy has never attracted a large number of believers. Under 3% of the world population is atheist. So a small number of atheists are responsible for a tremendous amount of carnage. On a per capita basis atheists are by far the worst murderers in human history.

What the hell does any of that have to do with someone rejecting skyfairies?

Generally speaking, people who can write can also read but I guess you're the exception, Huggy.

communism and atheism have nothing to do w/each other.
I've been posting the evidence. Why are you ignoring the facts? You seem closed-minded.

Child, why are you not only failing to back up your own words, but running in fear of mine?
When are you going to make a coherent statement that I can respond to?

This isn't hard, but it requires intellectual honesty.

I'm not so sure you can make it.
More name calling. Boring.

Please admit that atheists have been as intolerant and as anti-scientific as anybody.

Evidense of what? Why don't YOU admit you have a problem with Marxism and Stalinism and have intentionally misslead the USMB with the title of this thread.

A thinking human being can come to the conclusion that the concept of a "god" is nonsense without having ever heard of the politics of Russia or the Soviet Union.

I wonder...if atheism is the faith of the "thinking" man...why is it that intelligence and education appear to have taken a nosedive, oddly concurrent with the rise of mainstream atheism?

Shouldn't an atheist population be SMARTER than our past, more Christian, population?

Nothing ever turns out right for you bozos. First abortion went all to shit, none of the wonderful benefits of abortion on demand ever came to fruition..and now it appears atheists are a bunch of retards. They aren't smarter than Christian people at all! What a blow this must be for you..

The OP struggles to link any and all atheists with communism. Who cares if communists or Stalinists did not believe in a god?

It's not whether they believe in God...it's whether they see removing references to God as the role of the state.

And progressive do.

So did Marxists. And they believed that because they (correctly) understood that people who have no faith are easy to trick and to control.

Marx knew it. Lenin knew it. Hitler knew it. Pol Pot knew it. And Obama knows it.

GOD SENDS NO ONE TO HELL.
We are willing participants in the trip if we choose to follow father Satan. Our choice, not God's.
Atheists choose to reject Satan as much as they reject God!!! Atheists do not believe in following either of them, so if God sends them to hell it is not for choosing to follow Satan.

FWIW, as an atheist, I don't believe any of those things. Is it possible you're just starting with bad assumptions?
You are an atheist and yet you believe in an orderly universe and an afterlife? Really?
It is pure folly to see order in the universe. Everything is bumping against something else, somewhere, at some time.

The universe is perpetual comotion!

The old saying "no atheist in the foxholes" is an accurate assessment of the psychological conditions of soft core atheists. It's convenient to not worry about the after life if real life offers a variety of sinful excesses but when the manure hits the rotary blades who 'ya gonna call? You can bet your fragile asses that you are going to call on the big "G" of your choice.
The corollary to that is "there are no believers outside of foxholes!"

Whether or not you reject him doesn't matter. You don't follow him, he propels you along.

Just as the great tyrants encourage you to reject God in order to be more malleable, Satan likewise doesn't need you to KNOW you're doing his work. You do it regardless.

Notice how the argument reverses itself after it is disproved! First we choose to follow, then we do not follow but are propelled. That new argument is just as flawed, that which does not exist cannot propel anything.

Not one man in a thousand has either strength of mind or goodness of heart to be an Atheist. I repeat, not one man in a thousand has either strength of mind or goodness of heart to be an Atheist. -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge

"Throughout his adult life, Coleridge suffered from crippling bouts of anxiety and depression; it has been speculated by some that he suffered from bipolar disorder, a condition as yet unidentified during his lifetime.[1] Coleridge suffered from poor health that may have stemmed from a bout of rheumatic fever and other childhood illnesses. He was treated for these concerns with laudanum, which fostered a lifelong opium addiction."

Yeah. Whatever, if Coleridge says it, it must be true.
What he says is at least as valid as your aspersions.

Coleridge was an acknowledged loon and drug addict...everybody acknowledged it then and now. If he's your afterlife guide, well, it explains a lot.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (21 October 1772 – 25 July 1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He is probably best known for his poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as for his major prose workBiographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. He coined many familiar words and phrases, including the celebratedsuspension of disbelief. He was a major influence, via Emerson, on American transcendentalism.

Coleridge is one of the most important figures in English poetry. His poems directly and deeply influenced all the major poets of the age. He was known by his contemporaries as a meticulous craftsman who was more rigorous in his careful reworking of his poems than any other poet, and Southey and Wordsworth were dependent on his professional advice. His influence on Wordsworth is particularly important because many critics have credited Coleridge with the very idea of "Conversational Poetry". The idea of utilizing common, everyday language to express profound poetic images and ideas for which Wordsworth became so famous may have originated almost entirely in Coleridge’s mind. It is difficult to imagine Wordsworth’s great poems, The Excursion or The Prelude, ever having been written without the direct influence of Coleridge’s originality. As important as Coleridge was to poetry as a poet, he was equally important to poetry as a critic. Coleridge's philosophy of poetry, which he developed over many years, has been deeply influential in the field of literary criticism. This influence can be seen in such critics as A.O. Lovejoy and I.A. Richards.[citation needed]
[edit]The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Christabel, and Kubla Khan

Coleridge is probably best known for his long poems, The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Christabel. Even those who have never read the Rime have come under its influence: its words have given the English language the metaphor of an albatrossaround one's neck, the quotation of "water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink" (almost always rendered as "but not a drop to drink"), and the phrase "a sadder and a wiser man" (again, usually rendered as "sadder but wiser man"). The phrase "All creatures great and small" may have been inspired by The Rime:

Yes, Poe was a great artist, too. So was Van Gogh.

And this makes them experts on the afterlife and religion ... how? again? Mental illness can take people one of two ways...a belief they hear the voice of God...or not.
