Is Cash On Its Way Out?

It's good for customers, not really for the employees. Of course, that means that you have scan everything yourself too.
The checkout has always been a bottleneck. Anything to relieve it is a good thing. My store has four self-checkout stations and on busy days an employee is there to help out with customers that aren't familiar with them. It's economical for the store as it replaces at least one fully equipped checkout lane.
