Is Steubenville just the tip of an iceberg?

High school jocks defended after committing a heinous crime, protected and veiled by a community cover up...for no other reason than they are local "football heroes". Is Steubenville an anomaly, or a small example of a much deeper, more disturbing, social phenomenon?

Law enforcement needs to keep its head clear & do its duty. The coaches, schools & public need to keep in mind that young athletes are not paragons of virtue - they're young men & women who can fail if tempted too much or too often.

The rules of conduct for school athletes, coaches & teachers are meant to protect them. The coaches & teachers need to remember that they're concerned about the entire school, & that win/loss stats are mere stats. The players & the people they interact with are persons, & no amount of posturing or cheerleading, trophies, awards, nor championships will ever elevate stats over individuals.
