Since Israel had made deals in the past to release thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including many terrorists in exchange for a single Israeli hostage, my guess is that Hamas believed holding 100+ hostages would keep Israel from striking back too hard and they would again be able to free thousands of Palestinian prisoners.Please tell us what Hamas thought Israel’s response would be? Since Israel had made deals in the past to release thousands of Palestinian prisoners, including many terrorists in exchange for a single Israeli hostage, my guess is that Hamas believed holding 100+ hostages would keep Israel from striking back too hard and they would again be able to free thousands of Palestinian prisoners.

Clearly you are reveling in fantasies of piles of dead Palestinians, especially if they are women or children, but Israel's goal is to kill Hamas members while trying to kill as few other Gazans as possible. Since Hamas historically has used Gaza civilians as human shields, you are going to be very happy with all the civilians Hamas will get killed.
