A moderate Republican would get the support of Democrats to keep his Speakership against pro-Trump MAGA creeps who want to tear the country apart and close down the federal government. A little bit of bipartisanship can change rules in the House and support compromise legislation that will keep the government functioning … and maybe even deal with some other problems.
The small utterly anarchist wing of Republicans in Congress can continue to try to abuse the majority of their party, but they will get hammered if they do. They can choose to give millions of MAGA masturbators a little orgasm by nominating Donald Trump to be Speaker of the House! Or they can nominate a Trump family member, or Rudolph Giuliani, or Roger Stone.
Compromise with this element, as compromise with Donald Trump himself, is ultimately a suicidal choice.
