Keystone Pipeline Benefits?

For Oklahoma welders this was a mega bonus. $134,000 for work on the pipeline.

"Goulet said the project created 4,000 jobs, including 339 pipefitters and welders from Local 798.

"They're productive and we appreciate the support they provide, not only to the project, but what they provide for the permitting process for future projects," he said.

Goulet said the Gulf Coast pipeline's success should help TransCanada get approval for the Keystone XL pipeline. It will go from Nebraska to Canada.

Union leaders say these projects provide jobs and stability for hundreds of people. For example, they say, their members who worked on the Gulf Coast Pipeline earned, on average, $134,000 per person.

"Which means they've got healthcare for another year, they've got a pension credit for when they retire," said Danny Hendrix, with the Local 798. "It means that those families have got healthcare, dental care--so it means a lot. It means they can make a house payment, it means they can send their kids to college."

a one time situation IN OKLAHOMA .. Kansas and Texas, same thing ...

temp contract work, is not a JOB per se' ..

but it is good to know you're pro union now.

Construction Duration: Pipeline construction would likely take place from May to November. Employment for construction workers would be seasonal and temporary, lasting six to nine months each year. (2 years)
Construction Pay: XL construction jobs would likely pay more than the prevailing construction wage in the counties through which the pipeline would run. That may be partly attributable to two factors: Oil and gas pipeline construction jobs command higher pay than construction jobs as a whole; and TransCanada has agreed to put trained contractors and labor union members to work.
Workforce Mobility: Many workers would migrate to the Keystone XL region, possibly from around the country, lured by the construction jobs’ high pay.

What the hell is with you? Being a construction worker means every job you are on is a temporary job for crying out loud.

It's what they do for a living. To say that a construction worker isn't working a "real job" is just freaking nuts.

Wow, how could anyone post such an uninformed OP? Perhaps you should pose your question to the labor unions that are strongly supporting the Keystone Pipeline. They understand that it will create thousands of good-paying jobs in the U.S., in addition to its obvious benefits to Canada. It's a twofer, a win-win.

But, since Obama and the enviro whackos oppose it, most liberals just robotically oppose it as well and only read research that supports their opposition to this commonsense business proposal. How hard is it to understand that a pipeline built for hundreds and hundreds of miles on U.S. soil is going to generate jobs and business for Americans?

I am not liberal small fry! I voted near down the lie for Republicans the last 3 elections with a few libertarians sprinkled in there! I can question a partisan issue and still be conservative!

I notice how those who don't want the pipeline conveniently forget that the oil is shipped to refineries in Texas, etc. These refineries will generate jobs to process the oil. Then, to add insult to injury, they talk about 35 permanent jobs. What they fail to tell you is that all they are counting is the operators ... nobody talks about repairs, upkeep, and maintenance positions.

It's hilarious to see the RWnuts drag unionism out from under the bus just to defend Keystone.

You want to support tens of thousands of union jobs?

Stop opposing infrastructure spending.

Hooray! Now we have access to the most expensive imported oil in the world. Yippie! The price of crude oil will have to stay above $80 a barrel for Canadian oil to be profitable.....huzzah!

You have access already. Via rail and truck AND Keystone I and Keystone II.

What is it going to take to get it thru peoples thick skulls is that we are your number one supplier.

It's not going to change.

so where has all the help for this country gone with Keystone I & ll soundly in place ?

riddle me that

You buy our oil and refine it and fucking use it. Get a grip.

The pipeline is unnecessary, we have enough oil already with more domestic production to come. Canadian oil is the dirtiest, most inefficient and expensive oil in the world. I think we can do better.

Venezuelan heavy crude is perhaps dirtier and is being refined in So. Texas already. It is very similar to the Canadian Tar Sands. So I rather send the money North where a lot of US firms are doing business. I mean Canada has been very good to us, (if you don't count that Brian Adams thing............)
Canadians have been good to us, and we should review this situation with opened eyes, and with our allegiance with Canada over the past century plus, in mind.

I don't even know if this is something that should be 'a those on the Right and those on the Left issue'?

Let's approach it with honesty, truth.... and weigh the real Long Term, and Short Term Positives and Negatives...knowing the disadvantages upfront, so that if we as a nation do choose to go forward, we accept the possible negatives that could happen, because the advantages outweighed them.

Like, one negative that bothers me is:

A Business from a foreign Nation will be able to use OUR Government to take our own Property away, via Eminent Domain, to build the pipeline for oil, that won't even be coming to us for our nation's use. What if this were a Chinese company taking away our family farm, for a pipeline? What if this were Mexico, or Iran or Japan? Wouldn't this be setting us up for this to be legal as well, some day for something else?

Am I wrong on this?

Thoughts? Discuss....
Is that REALLY a good precedent to set?

From my understanding is that the keystone pipeline is solely about helping Canada get to the gulf and ship oil out the US and has nothing to do with: 1. Getting the US more oil (like many like myself were led to believe) and 2. Not about producing and sending any of our oil anywhere.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but other than the over inflated (yes the right lies about the number of jobs that are created, just like the left does) temporary jobs, what is the big benefit to the US that we continue fight back and forth over.

If it truly was about getting more Canadian oil to the stated, then I am for it. It should more forward, but if it's solely about getting Canadian oil to the gulf, then I have no idea why (other then generous kickbacks), whey the Republicans are pushing for this so hard!

keystone-pipeline-map-167.jpg

Adding to our pipeline network will also help our fracked oil get to market, without using more dangerous train cars or trucks.

yes every day we do not have the proposed pipeline up an running

is one more day the prezbos buddy warren buffet makes a million dollars

running crude oil by train across the pristine countryside

Just curious, who is paying for this Pipeline? Are any of our tax payers funding any of it?

And will we be able to utilize it? Or is this a closed pipeline?

And wouldn't it just be cheaper for TransCanada to put in a few refineries in Canada?

Why does this company need this pipeline, how do they benefit from this pipeline? And I don't mind if they benefit, just wondering what the true benefits of this is to them.....?

And are pipelines Oil Type Specific? Like built specifically for Tar sand oil so they can not transport other types of oil?

Edit: yes, I am admittingly, very ignorant on the topic..

TransCanada Pipelines is not a refining company. They build pipelines, not refineries. It's not economical to build refineries in Western Canada. It has been tried.

The benefits to the company is that producers will pay them to transport their product to refiners.

It is really really good to see the Republicans supporting unions. Hell they may go after the union vote for the Presidential election. Maybe even support some union initiatives. Like increased MW. Who knows for sure now that the Republicans have flipped out over them good paying union jobs.

Surely, you are not supporting this pipeline solely for the reason of being able to harm an American Businessman friendly with Obama,(who also employs MANY American citizens)???

Is that really what this is about to you? Sure sounds that way....

The problem is Western Canada is very mountainous. Building pipelines in that terrain is very difficult and costly because whatever route is taken, the oil would have to be go up countless slopes. The pressure required to do so is impractical.

There is already pipelines in operation from Alberta to the West Coast. Because of this Keystone debacle, there are proposals to build more.

Keystone is infrastructure idiot.

So are roads, bridges, tunnels, power grid, communications

Why don't we invest in infrastructure that actually helps Americans?

Oh I know.....that would be SOCIALISM

If the 20,000 jobs materialize that would be a good economic benefit.

But the KP must be oppose because it is allowing a foreign oil company to manipulate the US government into forcing Americans out of their property.
