A strong defense would be cool. There's no reason we couldn't be a bigger version of Switzerland. But instead we use our military to influence all kinds of shit in places where we shouldn't be. Using the excuse "in America's interests" is only because we've allowed the government to become a tool of wealthy to meet their own ends, and it basically gets used to secure oil and other resources for our consumption.

We could probably significantly and successfully cut military spending to only focus on actual defense. But, this is where republicans are right in saying that "defense" spending isn't nearly as big of a debt/spending driver as things like social security and healthcare.

Be that as it may, the value of a form of government is not found in what might be under theoretically ideal circumstances, but in what does happen given the failings of human nature. That's why Marxism fails. The theoretically ideal circumstances it requires never come to be, and the failings of human nature always overwhelm and undermine the system.
