A huge portion of South-West France has been Muslim for long time, Algerian, Tunisian, Moroccan immigrants mainly.

Also Marseille, the second largest city in France, already in 1999, 40% of residents had one immigrant parent.

Marseille has been craphole for decades....just watch "The French Connection II" and you'll see what a filthy cesspit Marseille was already in 1975.

My husband worked in a hospital in Marseille for a year. It was a hellhole.

Marseille: Europe's most dangerous place to be young

Away from its glamorous tourist centre, 15 men have died this year as the city's drug war spirals out of control. John Lichfield reports

...Proportionally, Marseille (population 800,000), now has almost as many drug-related murders as New York (population 8,000,000). Eyeing the issues, the French government has announced emergency action this month to stop the city, which will be the "European capital of culture" from January, from claiming title of the European capital of youth murder....

Drugs gangs fire Kalashnikov rifles at police as French Prime Minister visits city

Manuel Valls, the Prime Minister, today.

Mr Bourniquel, Marseille’s director of public safety, was accompanying officers who were attended the scene of suspected shoot-out between rival gangs.

Bullets narrowly missed their vehicles, while at least one policeman ‘lay on the floor of the car’ to insure he was not hit, said a local police source.

Marseille shootings: Recap updates as hooded gunmen armed with Kalashnikov rifles fire on police
It is thought that those involved in the original gun fight numbered around 15 and had been involved in a turf war for many months.

It is Mr Valls, the Prime Minister, who has been at the forefront of a vast clampdown on suspected Islamic terrorists following the Charlie Hebdo terrorist shootings in Paris last month.

He had not yet arrived in Marseille before the shooting, and there were ‘no plans to cancel his visit’, the source added.

Seventeen victims died in the Paris attacks, including police and journalists and cartoonists from the notoriously anti-Islamic satirical magazine.

heavily armed police could be seen surrounding the estate, which has a large Muslim community, many from North African backgrounds.

La Castellane is best known in France as the birthplace of Zinedine Zidane, the French-Algerian footballer whose goals won the World Cup for the country in 1998.

Mr Valls said last month that terrorist attacks have exposed a ‘geographic, social, ethnic apartheid’ present in French society.

He said there was an urgent need to fight hatred and discrimination, especially in deprived estates which are home to many communities of immigrant origin, especially Muslim.

All three Paris terrorists were born and brought up on Paris sink estates, and had started out as street criminals.

Imagine having to work in Marseille for a year, the poor man.

Yes the city centre is spruced up, but Marseille is huge and outside city it's craphole with at least 200 No-Go Zones.

I was stationed north of Bordeaux from 1958 to 1960 and clearly remember the worst, dingiest, and most run down areas were where "The Colonials" lived. Had some nice restaurants but the cuisine could only go so far. Actually preferred a restaurant run by a family from Indo-China.
