In theory, I have no problem with the death penalty But if the death penalty means waiting on death row for 20 or more years before it's carried out then we may as well do away with the death penalty and give them life in prison. And life in prison should actually mean life in prison.

Also, to get the death penalty, there should be an extremely high standard. There should be absolutely no doubt that the person is guilty of the heinous crime that deserves the death penalty. There have been several cases in which eye witnesses have been wrong and the wrong person has been convicted of murder and rape. The memory of eye witnesses often sucks big time.

Not sure there is a big push on this issue at a federal level but most death penalty opponents object to it mostly because there is a clear racial and economic bias in those sentenced. There have also been an alarming number of condemned cleared or commuted because of prosecutorial error or misconduct.

Personally I have all these objections plus one, I do not believe the state should have the right to take away your life under any circumstances.

Abolish the death penalty and the prison accounts of life inmates will be filled with money. That's what happened to Jeffrey Dahmer. An inmate with nothing to lose was paid to bash Dahmer's head in.

Notwithstanding that the right-wing is misrepresenting the law that Cuomo signed, everyone is hypocritical in this area. Pro-lifers are some of the most ardent and vociferous pro-death penalty proponents. Pro-life is the most preposterous misnomer for this group. Look at pro-life governors. Even when there is exculpatory evidence for someone on death row or there is an outcry over the unfairness of an execution, these governors could care less as well as most their supporters. No governor ever lost an election by not halting the execution of an innocent man.
