There was no shrapnel, it would have been seen clear as day in the air if that hit him in the ear. It also would have been on the ground and/or hit others.

A man behind him was shot, that's because of the trajectory of the bullets.

The next 5 shots were not muffled so they may have come from Crook's gun. There was an additional shot that was not muffled but clearly different from the other non-muffled shots. They know where they originated and if they find where it ended up they can determine if it was close to Trumps ear.

Just find a clip of the shooting on YouTube and listen to the shots. Different guns will make different sounds.
