I was in the military. I can tell you that there is no better way to honor the military than raise their pay. Parades dont do anything other than cause people to fall out in formation due to poor blood circulation.

Today is a day we celebrate our independence; independence we maintain thanks to our military. Who better to involve in this celebration than them?

Doing what we can to get along with our enemies and try to work things out verbally is a lot better than trying to work them out with American blood.

Patriotism and support for our military? Events marking Veteran's Day or Memorial Day come to mind. You always have some idiots who might complain but they are by far the minority. We, as a country typically come together for that. The right seems to think they have the copyright on patriotism, and that only they get to define it.
