The mistaken phone call that Marty Walsh, the longtime Massachusetts Democratic political consultant, got Tuesday night would count, to paraphrase Vice President Biden, as a pretty big deal.

As Walsh, who owns Gateway Public Solutions, watched election results come in on Tuesday, his phone began ringing. Martin Walsh, the Massachusetts state lawmaker, had just been announced as the winner of the Boston mayoral race.

The first call was from a White House operator who told him that President Obama wanted to speak to him. Walsh -- the consultant, not the mayor-elect -- quickly explained that she had the wrong guy. Minutes after he was off the phone with the White House, his phone was ringing again.

"It was Vice President Biden and he went right into it," Walsh recalled in a telephone interview Wednesday. "He said, 'Marty, congratulations you son of a gun.' He said, 'You did it!' I said, Mr. Vice President, thank you very much, but you have the wrong Marty Walsh."

Walsh said the vice president didn't miss a beat.

"He laughed and said, 'Well, at least I got a Marty Walsh in Boston." Before the vice president hung up, consultant Walsh said, Biden congratulated him and joked "But you are not the mayor now."
