The movie was a terrific action thriller but it was based on a failed mission. If you read the book, Luttrell was rescued by Army Rangers when the SEAL's became lost and surrounded in the Afghan mountains. SEALS always acted independently of the normal Military chain of command and the SEAL commander cobbled a rescue mission together that ended in disaster.
