I lived in Charleston for 3 years back in the late 80's , holy crap, it was like living on a different planet. bible thumping loons all over the place.

You'd be shocked to see it now. Sure, it is still in South Carolina, so there are some Bible pushers, especially inland near Summerville and up the coast in Myrtle Beach.

But there has been a MASSIVE influx of transplants from all over the world. Conde Naste named Charleston the #1 tourist city in the WORLD (a bit high, but still incredible).

You remember that little town called Mount Pleasant across the harbor? In the 80's it was a small fishing village. Its population now is around 80,000+, 4th largest municipality in the state. North Charleston has exploded with growth. I think the latest estimate puts the Charleston metro area population at 700,000 or more for the tri-counties.

And, with the transplants and changing culture of the city, it is definitely a center/moderate area. I think it was the lone county in the whole state that Obama won.

I think Elizabeth Colbert has a shot at winning it here.

Oh yeah, the Dorchester County/Summerville area definitely is more religious than the downtown/coastal areas. That area between Dorchester Road and West Ashley is a crime infested shithole now. Heard it used to be really nice. When the Navy base closed down, much of the area north of the peninsual went to hell with crime. North CHarleston has cleaned it up a lot, especially with Boeing and the AFB and airport expanding so much.
