Whatever. He reports to the AG. So, his status as a special counsel isn’t all that special. And he ain’t independent.

Due to perfectly legitimate Constitutional Law issues involving the separation of powers, I agree that he shouldn’t report to (or be appointed by) the courts. But, if there is any need for him to be a “special” counsel because of concerns about politicizing a criminal investigation and/or prosecution, then it makes absolutely no sense to have him “report” to his political boss.

Within the limited scope of his mandate and jurisdiction, he should effectively BE an AG — and he shouldn’t have to “report” to Garland, or anybody else, except the American people.

Bottom line: this does exactly and precisely nothing to assuage concerns about undue political influence over the investigation and prosecution of a former President (and present day candidate for re-election).
