Actually the Edwards case differed in who made the hush money payments. With Edwards it came from a third party, who didn't coordinate to report to the Edwards campaign. So that was like the Susan McDoughal case.
With Stormy Daniels Trump personally arranged the payments in an effort to effect the election. But m,ore importantly, Trump tried to write off the hush money payments as legal business expenses.
Bribes are not tax deductible.
