Michigan Lawmaker who opposed helmet laws dies in motorcycle crash

To argue that helmets don't save lives because of one crash is kind of lame.

Motorcycle Safety | Motor Vehicle Safety | CDC Injury Center

Motorcycle crash deaths are costly, but preventable. The single most effective way for states to save lives and save money is a universal helmet law.

  • Helmets saved an estimated 1,630 lives and $2.8 billion in economic costs in 2013.1
  • The United States could have saved an additional $1.1 billion in 2013 if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.1
  • Helmets reduce the risk of death by 37%.1
  • Helmets reduce the risk of head injury by 69%.2,3
“Our role is to identify ways to prevent injury and death and rigorously check what works and what does not work. For motorcycle safety, the research shows that universal helmet laws are the most effective way to reduce the number of deaths and traumatic brain injuries that result from crashes.”

- Dr. Thomas Frieden, CDC Director

Then again, this is the CDC so I'm sure the more conspiracy minded probably think they have an agenda against freedom and are secretly padding helmets with fluoride tablets.
There are worse things than dying, like losing your freedom to some fucked up socialist federal government...

Really? Losing your freedom to not wear a helmet is worse than death? That's you know...kind of ridiculous.
It's a freedom thing you would not understand, if someone wants to wear helmet knock themselves out if someone does not knock themselves out. No one should give a shit if someone wears a helmet or a seatbelt or not. Fucking progressives and messing with people's personal lives

Is that it? It's a freedom thing? Not really an argument.
First of all there's no guarantee a helmet will save your life, and if you Wreck at high-speed's helmet may save your head but your neck will break so you will want to die. Wearing a helmet in town sucks ass, you can't hear shit, your vision is impaired, and you feel like a fucking bobble head.

Plus it's not about wearing the helmet or seatbelt, it's a government telling you what to do with your own fucking life. Someone famous once said "there are worse things than dying"…

I think the laws exist to save lives and they do, do that.

That is how they are justified, and not why they exist.

Micromanagement is not caring. Punishment for refusing to be micromanaged is institutionalized slavery.

Whether it's the government's responsibility to save lives I suppose would be the argument.

The state has no responsibilities besides maintaining its hegemony over the civil population.

I agree with everything. However, if you are riding and you aren't wearing a helmet don't ask the taxpayers to pay for your medical care. Deal?

I think having a discussion about if those laws should exist but to frame in a way that government just wants control is a little out there.

The state is a machine that always seeks to prevent its own power from being undermined, hence why these frivolous laws exist.

Protecting humans from themselves is a prime example of pure control.

Grow up, let's not be a gullible lemming. Lol

The taxpayers do not have a choice in the matter.

Slavery? Wearing a helmet is slavery? Are crosswalks the death penalty or what?

So, I'm assuming your are OK with marriage equality and transgenders using the bathroom they feel most comfortable in, correct?

Absolutely, if you can't pay for the risk - don't take the risk.

Slavery? Wearing a helmet is slavery? Are crosswalks the death penalty or what?

Forcing someone to wear a helmet under duress is slavery.

The only relevant question is whether you have control or are being controlled.

So, I'm assuming your are OK with marriage equality and transgenders using the bathroom they feel most comfortable in, correct?

Certainly.

You're the one that saying don't get off topic… LOL

The taxpayers do not have a choice in the matter.

They do, you can vote the people out who pass helmet laws.

I also agree with westwall, you get killed riding your bike while not wearing a helmet then you gave up the right to ask anything from tax payers or in some cases even the person who hit you, if your head goes splat, don't expect much for your family.

It apparently gives you a hard on to control other people's lives… LOL

Ahhhh, but we can though. I would have no problem calling for legislation that does away with helmet laws. The quid pro quo being you take care of yourself. And if you didn't, you get to die for your decision.

In your naive fantasy world where civilian votes matter.

I do not ask for anything.

Being the master thief that I am, be thankful that I have not exploited the dozen or so loopholes I could easily use to steal from the government.

Anyone who doesn't wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle is a damn fool.

Anyone who doesn't wear a seatbelt when driving a car is a damn fool.

The time required to engage either one is minimal and they increase greatly a person's chance of surviving an accident.

That being said, as a driver of cars and a onetime motorcycle enthusiast, I do not support mandatory laws for either. Never have, never will. Think of it as a way to weed out the dummies...

BUT...

If a state has mandatory seatbelt laws (and I think most, if not all, of them do) I believe they should also have mandatory helmet laws.

If you want to prolong lives why don't you make drivers of cars wear a helmet , fire suit......

If it is good enough for F1, Nasscar, Indy car..why do we ignore the safety?

Why is it funny?

Because it is inconvenient for you?

Do liberals want to save life's or not?

It's funny because it's funny. It made me chuckle.

Nothing "inconvenient" at all.

This post is even funnier because I'm not a liberal...

Why do you always say that? You post like a flaming liberal all the Damn time.

No, I post like a rational, pragmatic moderate. Perhaps at times like a libertarian. I was a registered Republican for many years, but the GOP of today is nothing, nothing like the GP of my youth. The same can be said of the Democrats. Both should be ashamed of what they have become. Because I won't toe a party line means I have been called a liberal by the right, and a conservative by the left. I have called both sides on their bullshit, and I have given credit to both sides wen they deserve it. Neither Hilliary nor Dump are qualified to be President. They are both shit stains on their respective parties.

If people have a problem with that, well, that's their problem.
tl;dr

No it's not. There is no definition of slavery that involves motorcycle helmets. That is just a lame argument that makes you look like a kook. Go ask a trafficked female sex worker about calling helmet laws slavery. My, oh my what a privileged life we live in the States.

The only relevant question is whether you have control or are being controlled.

No, actually it's not. Do helmet laws save lives? Yes. Do helmet laws save money? Yes. See? Two questions right there and they are actually relevant to the conversation.

So, I'm assuming your are OK with marriage equality and transgenders using the bathroom they feel most comfortable in, correct?

Certainly.

Good.

He knew the risk for not wearing a helmet and sadly paid the price for his silliness. I still do not think it there should be a universal helmet law, though.
He was wearing a helmet. But people should have the option to be idiots or not. Absolutely

Here in South Dakota we've never had a helmet law for adults, and we have the world's largest biker rally. People except the risk and don't need a bunch of fucked up Progressives who never ride telling them what to do...

Your call for legislation is worthless.

It is difficult enough to gain sufficient outcry for anything, and it certainly is not going to work for helmet laws.

Have fun with that grassroots campaign though. Maybe if you try really hard it will become a referendum...
