The man with the knife put the knife away but Blevins remained armed with the machete.

When someone attempted to disarm him that person was cut which is what Blevins was charged for.

Did he have an obligation to disarm after the first man did?

That seems to be the actual question here. It seems he could have simply walked away. Being outnumbered would have still felt threatened?
