New York City to pay $98 million to settle case alleging FDNY discriminated against minority applicants* - NY Daily News
MARCH 18, 2014, 2:59 PM
New York City reached an historic settlement with the Vulcan Society of black firefighters, agreeing to pay $98 million in back pay and benefits to minority FDNY applicants without acknowledging intentional discrimination at the fire department.
It was the latest decision by Mayor de Blasio to change course and end a legal controversy stemming from the Bloomberg administration. The FDNY discrimination case spanned seven years and began when the U.S. Justice Department under former President George W. Bush filed a landmark lawsuit alleging that two written exams for prospective firefighters were biased against blacks and Latinos in an effort to keep the FDNY predominantly white.
