Impeachment is a political issue. Not a legal one. Nobody is convicted or acquitted. The senate decides to remove or not remove and the process is known in American Constitutional law as a ”nonjusticiable” one. That means it is entirely a political exercise and at the whim of politicians whatever their motivations.
Clinton was retained in office because Democrat Senators said before the proceedings that they would not vote to remove no matter what the evidence was. Donald Trump will never be impeached, if for no other reason than having the same advantage in the House and Senate that Clinton had in the Senate...much less removed.
