What do you think of the Nordic economic model? There are a lot of things that I like in it, but am still undecided about a lot also. I can see people being more willing to start their own business when they know they have a safety net. Now in the US I think fewer businesses are starting just because the cost of healthcare is so high. People just can't afford to do it anymore.

Any thoughts on the free college? That must remove stress for a lot of people. Cost of college is going up like healthcare here. Most people can't afford the really expensive schools or go deeply into debt.

Of all industrial nations, only USA can't afford national health care. In that category we're in the same boat as most of Africa and the poorer countries in South America. In my opinion there would be more small entrepreneurship in this country is we had a national health care system like other advanced nations.

Unlikely. Government always raises costs. Small businesses are shrinking as costs rise and demand lowers. We have expensive health care for numerous reasons but socialists limit their scope exclusively on lack of federal oversight.

I do see both your points. I really think we need to lower the cost of healthcare somehow. I couldn't imagine starting your own business now if you have a family and having to pay for healthcare. You're already taking a huge risk with a new business, I think these costs make it so fewer are will to take the risk.

How about the free college education? With the costs of college going up here not many can afford the expensive schools or go deeply into debt. This would seem to make sure the best get a chance at a good education rather than the richest.

Norway has a population of 5 million people...which would fit comfortably as a suburb of New York City.

Maybe the analogy is a bit stretched.

It is definitely questionable of whether it could be used in a country as big as the US. I'm still interested in what people think about it on it's own though. Like I think sure they pay more in taxes, but they don't have to worry about healthcare or saving up for college. That must be pretty nice.

Nordic countries are small, with highly homogenous populations and culture.

Norway also exploits its oil resources - it's the Saudi Arabia of northern Europe.

The lessons here are: culture and common values matter; and using fossil fuel resources is a very good idea.

They also have a massive oil industry funding the government. Although the fields are on decline.

How does their "economic model" arrange to have massive oil reserves located within the territorial boundries of the country?

California has massive oil reserves in their territorial boundaries...but their economic model is 'stupidity wins'.

Do all the Scandinavian countries have a massive oil industry? This model seems to be followed by all of them.

How much do you want to put into a limited resource?

All resources are limited. Economic models that assume unlimited resources always break down. Their end is never pretty.

So you think oil is paying for everything rather than higher taxes? Do all Scandinavian countries have lots of oil?

The US supports more illegal criminal aliens than the entire population of Norway and yet they preach to us about caring capitalism.
