The National Security Agency is currently collecting the telephone records of millions of US customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecoms providers, under a top secret court order issued in April.

The order, a copy of which has been obtained by the Guardian, requires Verizon on an "ongoing, daily basis" to give the NSA information on all telephone calls in its systems, both within the US and between the US and other countries.

The document shows for the first time that under the Obama administration the communication records of millions of US citizens are being collected indiscriminately and in bulk – regardless of whether they are suspected of any wrongdoing.

The secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (Fisa) granted the order to the FBI on April 25, giving the government unlimited authority to obtain the data for a specified three-month period ending on July 19.

Under the terms of the blanket order, the numbers of both parties on a call are handed over, as is location data, call duration, unique identifiers, and the time and duration of all calls. The contents of the conversation itself are not covered.

The disclosure is likely to reignite longstanding debates in the US over the proper extent of the government's domestic spying powers.

I'd love to say I am shocked. But sadly Im not.

I pity the fool who has to listen to my phone conversations. Not exactly the height of excitement.

Fan. Though I had my screen name before the show came out. Last time I thought I needed a change i figured, why not use Aang.

I wont be using any of those blue things from the movie with a similiar name.

I don't have anything to hide either. But I dont want the government listening to my phone calls either. Especially when the government consists of people who I routinely speak out against.

guess we will have to create our own languages between friends/family. I heard about this as well, they will be using "Keywords" when investigating.

That is nuts. That is what apologists say.

Even though nobody is actually listening to calls.....and the shit is legal....it is bullshit and the data mining is an invasion of privacy.

If they have a suspect nd then get a warrant....no problem. But the fishing is bullshit.

Condoning it is bullshit.

And Tiger......you still ain't funny. Keep trying.

How about if they use it to dig up dirty laundry on political opponents ? And how are you going to know what they did/do with it ?

Great question, Tiger. Is it a riddle?

Maybe you should try to be The Riddler instead of The Joker!

Fox News confirmed that the NSA and FBI began this in 2007 - under Bush. What are wingnuts afraid of?

Bush began it. Obama keeps the ball rolling. Are you defending it? (Not every issue is partisan)
