For people who think the president's standing doesnt matter because he isn't up for re-election, wrong. Obama failed to clinch a crucial trade agreement with the Japanese on this trip. He also mouthed the usual about how the US will come to Japan's aid. I doubt anyone believes that at this point. And then there was this:
Asked about the summit, Finance Minister Taro Aso told a news conference that Obama did not have the clout to get consensus in the United States and that a deal was unlikely at least until after the U.S. mid-term Congressional elections in November.
Obama wraps up Japan visit but no trade deal

He's blaming the lack of consensus in government eh? Is he suggesting the Republicans would block it?

Obviously, the Japanese are racist. There is no other explanation why they wouldn't agree with the boy king.

Despite a last-minute push through the night, the two sides could not bridge their differences on tariffs and market access, clouding the prospects for the proposed free-trade pact among a dozen nations that include the U.S., Japan, Canada and Mexico.

Obama had hoped to come away from his two-day summit with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe with a bilateral deal that would propel the stalled Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations to a conclusion.

NAFTA V.2?

No thanks.

I am glad this is falling apart.

He is stating Obama's lack of clout at home will make him unable to get any deal approved. He is probably right.
A free trade deal ought to be a no brainer. Except when the Obama administration gets involved. It took them years to send a signed deal with Colombia to the Senate.

Japan knows that the US won't do anything when China takes the islands they want. Why should they give us anything.

Obama's trip was a signal to Putin and nothing more.

While Obama was putting boots on the ground in countries that are in Putin's front yard, Obama was simultaneously making a tour of countries in Putin's back yard. A subtle way of poking Putin's paranoia.

Just last month the rwer's on this board were bitching about Oblama making any trade agreement...as they were about the European trade summit....

Well no.

It's a pretty bad deal. It's a huge threat to American Jobs..but rich folks love it.

And it's got nothing to do with "clout".

Read the freakin article.

Because free trade agreements only benefit one country, right?
Don't worry: they wont outsource janitorial services so your job is safe.
