In 1927 a man from NY arrived in nearby Bristol TN with recording equipment and paid $50 to sing into the box. Maybelle Carter took her family and Country Music was born.

On this day in 1909, Maybelle Carter, legendary pioneer of country music, was born in Nickelsville, VA. Maybelle was a incredibly influential figure, from her days with Sara and A.P. as the Original Carter Family to her time as "Mother Maybelle" performing with her three daughters, Helen, Anita, and June.

Maybelle was a prominent participant in the Bristol Sessions of 1927 that popularized old-time mountain music and sparked the nationwide explosion of country music. She invented the "Carter Scratch" picking technique and brought the autoharp into the mainstream. Her influence on the world of music is nearly immeasurable.
