Frank Bruni is quite the accomplished journalist. That facts is indisputable. In his article he puts forth an opinion based on facts before him, rather than an opinion we often see -- of a partisan opinion in search of facts to back up the opinion. I like his thoughts on this, because it gets into Trump's on again/off again shoutings of whether or not he'll debate Harris, when, why, how, if...

Trump Should Be Scared — Very Scared — of Debating Kamala Harris

It’s easy to find examples of Vice President Kamala Harris answering questions in a vacuous, speciously thoughtful manner that borders on caricature, and it’s easy to conclude from that oratorical oatmeal that she has delayed a one-on-one sit-down with a serious journalist because she’s not nimble in unscripted situations or fluent in the necessary facts. Those are the Republican talking points, anyway.

But that assessment ignores her performance in a 2020 debate with the vice president at that time, Mike Pence. Remember it? A high-stakes encounter as risky as any interview with any network heavyweight, she did fine. Better than fine, in fact. Several post-debate surveys of viewers, including one published by 538 and another by CNN, found that Harris won it. Granted, Pence was contending with a fly’s decision to claim a time-share on his head, but still. He had been on the national political stage longer than she had, and she wasn’t buggy in the least.

Which is why Donald Trump’s recent complaints about and threats to back out of the planned ABC News debate on Sept. 10 make total sense. He should be hesitant. In fact, he should be scared.

Trump likely understands (if I can credit him with such a feat) that Harris is an experienced attorney, and law schools includes a lot of arguing and debating. They are literally trained to debate so that they can perform in a court room in front of a Judge, Trump is doomed against Harris.

Here's why his opinion is wrong.

Harris has the intelligence needed to soundly defeat Trump in a logical debate..

But the winner of the debate will be in the eyes of the beholder.

Once that is accepted, it's logical to ask if in fact Trump has the greater ability considering the relative intelligence of the American audience?

I'll just add: Is there intelligence in Trump proclaiming that America is to blame for starting the war against Russia?

I believe any woman of color, who is or has been a prosecutor makes Trump very upset. The indignity (to him) of people below his status in society .. how dare they. He will not be able to control himself -- not that he ever was,

What? Where are you coming from and who let you loose?

Then he is a liar and a fake news guy....
That's one way of handling reality I guess.

From The Tennessean:

Stalwart evangelical supporters of Trump called out the GOP presidential nominee for taking a less hard-lined stance against abortion, going as far to say Trump is no less pro-choice than Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris. The recent angst is a continuation of a debate that erupted ahead of the Republican National Convention in July, when the religious right urged the GOP not to soften its stance on abortion.

Influential leaders within the Nashville-based Southern Baptist Convention and other prominent evangelical figures are increasingly expressing a sense of disillusionment and are outright saying they won’t vote for Trump come November.

I hope this comes up in the debate, the digbat will squirm like a worm.
