Beirut: There is nowhere to left run for the civilians of Palmyra – the latest Syrian city to fall to the extremist Islamic State group.
For now the urban centre – home to up to 100,000 residents and tens of thousands of internally displaced Syrians who have fled the eastern cities of Raqqa and Deir al-Zor – is crippled.

There is no electricity or running water, the main hospital suffered a direct hit on Wednesday, food supplies are dwindling and the roads leading out of the city are either battlegrounds or lined with land mines and IEDs, residents report.

While much of the attention has focussed on the threat to the ancient city and its priceless ruins, those left in the besieged urban centre fear they have been abandoned to Islamic State militants and a regime intent on retribution.
"Since yesterday ISIS fighters were busy looking for Syrian army fighters and militias who were backing the regime, they are going house to house," says an activist from Palmyra, Dahham Tadmori, who asked that his real name not be used.
