The Abu Sayyaf militants in southern Philippines, who have threatened to behead one of their two German hostages if Berlin fails to pay €4.3m in ransom and stop supporting US-led coalition air strikes against the Islamic State or IS in Iraq and Syria, is not directly linked to the Islamic State (IS), according to government and military officials in Manila.
Even so, the Philippines is on high alert and has beefed up security measures in order to deny entry of IS operatives into the country.
