Looking at the debt of US cities,....it isn't a sure thing pinning it on one party.

"Truth in Accounting has released its 2020 Financial State of Cities report, highlighting the fiscal health of America's 75 most populous cities. Statista's Niall McCarthy notes that the study found that this year, 63 cities do not have enough money to pay their bills and total municipal debt now stands at $323 billion.

It ranked the cities according to their taxpayer burden or surplus which is the amount each taxpayer would have to pay to clear municipal debt with nothing, such as benefits and services, in exchange."

Look Candy, regardless of GOPer or Democrat, I can get elected if I supply my constituents with stuff I can NOT pay for. But what happens if it is against the rules to run a deficit for longer than say, 2 or 3 years?

Look Candy, regardless of GOPer or Democrat, I can get elected if I supply my constituents with stuff I can NOT pay for. But what happens if it is against the rules to run a deficit for longer than say, 2 or 3 years?

We should debate this as Americans, 1 at the local level, 2 at the national level.

Our politicians of BOTH stripes lose their power, if they can NOT deficit spend.

A huge part of the debt is owed to retired and retiring city workers.

The reason is that mayors rubber stamp raises and perqs to get union votes.....
I don't fault the unions....that's their function.....

....but politicians should be held criminally responsible after and long after their terms, if the burden to the public is revealed. The politician should have to use due diligence before assigning the debt to the voters.

Of all the money spent on defense world wide, the US with something like 6% of the population spends over 1/2 of that money. Willing to give that up?

Personally I think every midterm year 2010, 2014, 2018, 2022, etc... we have zero based budgeting. Every fed department has a month starting Jan 2 to submit their budget. The President then submits a formal budget to the Congress. February is spent hashing it out. The budget is signed 3/1 for 2 years. No annual increases.

The point is to start at zero by law and it’s sealed for 2 years. Every dime is spent for it’s intended purposes.

Next, pass laws to where deficit spending can only be approved for specific departments. The AG dept doesn’t get deficit spending. FEMA does. Defense does. HHS does. But these will be done by separate bills that require super majorities.

That is statutory. On the tactical end...

Next, close most tax loopholes and raise federal income taxes. It’s time.

Finally, cut out weapons development. The F15 that the Air Force has retired as well as the F14 are still superior to 90% of what the rest of the world has. The Virginia class Subs are superior to the LA class but the LA class was and is superior to what the rest of the world has not to mention the Seawolf class which was between the LA and VA. We’re planning 66 of these subs at $3 billion each. Over 100B dollars to replace a class of subs that were superior to anything in the water. If goes on and on. Keep researching but stop the insane development costs.
