Australian suspected of Mossad links dies in Israeli jail

Evidence has been unearthed that strongly suggests Israel's infamous Prisoner X, who was jailed under extraordinary circumstances in 2010, was an Australian national from Melbourne.

Investigations by the ABC 's Foreign Correspondent program have revealed Ben Zygier, who used the name Ben Alon in Israel, was found hanged in a high-security cell at a prison near Tel Aviv in late 2010.

His body was flown to Melbourne for burial a week later.

The death goes part of the way to explain the existence in Israel of a so-called Prisoner X, widely speculated in local and international media as an inmate whose presence has been acknowledged by neither the jail system nor the government.

The case is regarded as one of the most sensitive secrets of Israel's intelligence community, with the government going to extraordinary lengths to stifle media coverage and gag attempts by human rights organisations to expose the situation

The ABC report makes clear that Zygier was essentially disappeared by security forces. This is common for Palestinians charged with security offenses, but extraordinary for an Israeli Jew. One of the few previous incidents that is comparable is the disappearance and secret imprisonment of KGB spy, Marcus Klingberg, by Israel for over ten years. Clearly, Zygier did something akin to the “crimes” of which Klingberg was accused.

Israel rattled by mysterious Australian prisoner - ABC

An Australian man committed suicide in a high-security Israeli jail in 2010 after being held for months in great secrecy, Australia's ABC channel said on Tuesday, throwing new light on a case that has rattled Israel.

The unsourced ABC story named the man, known previously only as "prisoner x", as Ben Zygier. It added that it "understood" the 34-year-old from Melbourne had been previously recruited by the Israeli spy agency Mossad.

There was no official comment on the story in Israel.

However, within hours of the report surfacing, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office summoned Israeli editors to ask them not to publish a story "that is very embarrassing to a certain government agency", Israel's Haaretz newspaper said.

"The emergency meeting was called following a broadcast outside Israel regarding the incident in question," Haaretz said, giving no further information.

Shortly afterwards, all reference to the Australian report vanished from Israeli news sites -- including Haaretz itself.

That's very sad, Yousef Mohammed, but aren't you at all concerned with what happens in your old country?

My, my, Yousef Mohammed claims he is not from Iran, but someone who speaks Farsi has stated that Yousef Mohammed can read Farsi backwards and forward like a native. It would be surprising if anyone visiting another country for a short time would pick up the language so completely that they could do this amazing thing. It's OK if you come from Iran, Yousef. We wouldn't hold it against you. However, it certainly sounds that you picked up how bad the Jews and Israelis are from your alleged short time in Iran.

Ben Zygier is believed to have been imprisoned at Ayalon Prison...
:eusa_eh:
Israel confirms it imprisoned man under false name
13 February 2013 - Israel has for the first time confirmed it imprisoned an Australian-Israeli man under a false identity for security reasons, and that he died in custody.
The justice ministry did not name the man - previously known as Prisoner X, and recently identified by Australian media as Ben Zygier - but said his family was notified of his detention. He was held following a court order and his rights were upheld, it added. The ministry also stated that the man killed himself inside his cell in 2010. On Wednesday, Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr ordered a review of how diplomats handled the detention of Mr Zygier, who is believed to have worked for Israel's Mossad intelligence agency.

On Thursday, Mr Carr told a parliamentary committee that Canberra had been informed of Mr Zygier's detention in February 2010. Australia was told through intelligence channels that he had been detained "in relation to serious offences under Israeli national security legislation". He "would be treated in accordance with his lawful rights as an Israeli citizen", Australia was told. No request for consular support was received, Mr Carr said.

'Negligence'

Speculation about the existence and identity of Prisoner X has been rife since reports of his death broke in the Israeli media two years ago, despite strict reporting restrictions imposed by the Israeli authorities. The statement published by the Israeli justice ministry on Wednesday evening gave only a few new details about the case. "For security reasons, the prisoner was held under a pseudonym, but his family was notified of the arrest immediately," it said. "The prisoner was held in jail under a warrant issued by a court. The proceedings were overseen by senior officials in the justice ministry and he was duly represented in all the proceedings against him."

The statement added that he "was found dead in his cell two years ago" and that a closed-door inquiry into the death was ordered at the time. The justice ministry said the investigation concluded six weeks ago that the cause of the prisoner's death was suicide, but that the judge recommended that the state "pursue a negligence investigation". "National security prevents the release of any other details in this case."

Hanged

The identity of Prisoner X was revealed on Tuesday by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), which named him as Ben Zygier. According to its report, he was an active member of Melbourne's Jewish community before emigrating to Israel in 2000 and serving in the army. At the time of his death, Mr Zygier was 34 and married to an Israeli woman and had two children. He is known to have gone by the Hebrew name of Ben Alon in Israel and also carried an Australian passport bearing the name Ben Allen. Fairfax said he had also called himself Benjamin Burrows. The reason for Mr Zygier's arrest and imprisonment in Israel is not known, but ABC said it understood he had been recruited by Mossad.

Israel sheds light on death of suspected spy
Feb 13,`13 -- Israel on Wednesday admitted for the first time that it held an Israeli with dual citizenship under a false name for security reasons, and that he died in prison more than two years ago - details that shed new light on a case that has strained relations with its close ally Australia and raised questions about its secretive Mossad agency.
The admission confirmed key elements of an Australian TV report about the case, but also left unanswered major questions about the case, including the man's identity, why he was incarcerated, if he was a citizen of Australia and whether he worked for the Mossad. A report by Australia's national broadcaster, ABC, identified the man as Ben Zygier. The report said he was a Jewish-Australian immigrant to Israel who was working for the Mossad when he was placed in a maximum-security prison for an unspecified crime in 2010. The report said he died in December of that year, apparently by suicide. Israel, which refused to acknowledge the Australian report for nearly 24 hours, began lifting the veil of secrecy on the case on Wednesday.

Early in the day, it allowed Israeli media to report on the Australian news report. Then, late at night, a court order lifted parts of a series of gag orders dating back to March 2010, and confirmed elements of the report. Wednesday's court order, emailed to reporters by Israel's Justice Ministry, confirmed that an Israeli man who held dual citizenship in an undisclosed country died in custody in 2010. Identifying the man only as the Hebrew equivalent of John Doe, the court order said the prisoner's family was notified immediately after he was detained. It said he was imprisoned under a court order, that the prisoner's full rights were retained and named three Israeli lawyers who represented him.

The court order said that after the prisoner was found dead in his cell, a judge ordered an investigation into his death. About six weeks ago, the court statement said, the investigation concluded that he committed suicide. However, a judge has now asked the state to check for possible negligence. In another curious wrinkle in the case, Israeli TV reported that the prisoner, identified by Australian media as Ben Zygier, had worked as a clerk in the international business department of one of Israel's most prestigious law firms, Herzog Fox & Neeman. The firm is partially owned by Israel's Justice Minister, Yaakov Neeman. When asked in parliament about the Australian TV report on Tuesday, Neeman said he knew nothing of the case but said any allegations, if true, should be investigated.

Australian legislators demanded answers Wednesday about the suspicious death, and the government ordered a review of the case. Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr said a review would be conducted of his department's handling of the prisoner. According to Australian media, Zygier used the name Ben Allen in his Australian passport. He was also known as Ben Alon. A spokesman for Carr said the review was not meant "to suggest anything untoward has happened, but given that there's an interest in the case, let's have the review." Carr also revealed that some Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade officials knew in 2010 that Allen was detained, contradicting an earlier statement that the department only became aware after he died.

Ben Zygier not the first Israeli prisoner held under Prisoner X status...

Mysterious life and death of Australian Mossad agent
February 13, 2013, Ben Zygier, Australian citizen and Mossad agent, was not the first Prisoner X to be held secretly in an Israeli jail. Double agents caught after turning traitor or crossing the lines into crime for personal motives are the exception - but not unknown in most spy agencies. In the 1950s, Israeli agent Mordecai (Mottele) Kedar was secretly incarcerated for many years for betraying his mission.
The Australian ABC went to great lengths to uncover the story of the Israeli-Australian double citizen, aka Ben Alon, who committed suicide on Dec. 15, 2010 at the age of 34 in a top-security cell of Ayalon Prison where he was held in solitary confinement. A former inmate of that cell is said to have been Yitzhak Rabin’s assassin Yigal Amir. After a longstanding Israeli gag order, his name was finally released for publication Wednesday, Feb. 13.

According to ABC, after his death, his body was flown to Melbourne, Australia, where his family, active in the local Jewish community, buried him one week later. The headstone on his grave bears his name and the dates of his birth and death. The ABC investigation disclosed that an autopsy was conducted by the Israeli Forensic Institute which issued a death certificate listing the cause of death as asphyxiation by hanging in the name of Ben Alon. Also found was a second Australian passport in the name of Ben Allen.

An Israeli organization called ZAKA, religious volunteers known for recovering the remains of Jewish terrorism victims, arranged for the body to be flown to Melbourne. ABC reporters left no stone unturned to discover the reason for the extraordinary cover-up by the Israeli government. Was this a matter of national security? And what did the Australian authorities know? When Ben Zygier died in that prison what questions were asked by Australian diplomats and what were they told? And, finally, how did he manage to kill himself in a top-security cell under constant surveillance?

A senior Israeli intelligence official, who remained anonymous, told Australian TV that if what Ben Zygier did and knew were made public, it would pose an immediate threat to Israel as a nation state. International protocols demand that when a foreign national is jailed or dies, their diplomatic mission must be informed. The Australian new investigators assumed that whatever crime or sin Ben Zygier committed, it must have involved espionage, possibly treachery, and very, very sensitive information endangering Israel.
Still, despite their best professional efforts, ABC’s reporters did not find a single lead to the mysterious story of Prisoner X or verify any wild conjectures. One tied him to various episodes in which Israeli Mossad undercover agents were found operating on Australian passports; another, to the Iranian defector, Gen. Ali Ashgari, who disappeared from his hotel in Istanbul with suitcases full of Iranian nuclear secrets.

Australia Asks Israel to Explain Death of ‘Spy’
February 17, 2013 - Israel’s Mossad spy agency is at the center of a scandal that is testing relations with Australia.
Australia is demanding information from Israel on the mysterious death of an alleged Mossad spy who held duel Australian-Israeli citizenship. The man known as “Prisoner X” reportedly committed suicide in an Israeli prison two years ago. Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr has ordered an investigation into the case and his department will issue a report. “We have asked the Israeli government for a contribution to that report. We want to give them an opportunity to submit to us an explanation of how this tragic death came about.” According to Australian media, Prisoner X hanged himself while in solitary confinement after Israel accused him of treason.

The case has caused an uproar in Australia and Israel. Questions have been asked as to how someone could commit suicide while under 24-hour surveillance at a high-security prison. Israel has maintained a blackout on many details of the case, raising criticism about Israeli censorship laws in an era when the affair was widely reported everywhere else on the Internet. Breaking official silence on the case, Israeli Prime Benjamin Netanyahu defended the security establishment, saying that secrecy is a necessity. Netanyahu told his Cabinet that Israel faces threats unlike any other nation, and exposing intelligence operations can seriously compromise state security.

But Australia wants answers, especially after Mossad agents allegedly used Australian passports in the assassination of a senior operative of the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Dubai in 2010. Australia angrily expelled a member of the Israeli Embassy in retaliation. Australian media say Prisoner X used Australian passports in Mossad operations in Iran and several Arab countries. The media reports say he contacted Australian authorities and planned to expose the use of the passports in operations, prompting his arrest by Israel.

I've been taking a closer look at this story and it's becoming more interesting by the moment.
The press is pretty good at pulling interesting snippets of information from past stories and threading them together.
They've managed to put this man in with the passport scandal and associated him with straw companies dealing with Iran as well as assassinations and suggested links to false flag operations.
This makes me wonder even more about the Muslims attack on a tourist bus by some of the most wanted men in the world, who the intelligence agencies know all about but can't manage to name.

I suspect this story will go a lot further before we get all the truth out.

Ben Zygier was identified last month by Australian media as the mysterious Prisoner X...
:eusa_eh:
Australia says Prisoner X worked for Israeli government
6 March 2013 - Australia has confirmed for the first time that an Australian-Israeli man who died while secretly jailed in Israel worked for the Israeli government.
An official report also raised questions on the "misuse of Australian passports by Israeli intelligence". The man was called Prisoner X by media because his identity and reasons for confinement were so secret. He was recently identified in Australian media as Ben Zygier, who held dual citizenship. Mr Zygier is believed to have been arrested in 2010 and held in secret in Israel's maximum security Ayalon prison. Australian media say Ben Zygier was imprisoned because Israel suspected he had informed Australia's security agency of Mossad operations.

He is reported to have hanged himself, aged 34, in the prison in December 2010. A post-mortem examination concluded he died of asphyxiation. "Mr Zygier went off to live in another country, for 10 years, took out citizenship of that country, worked for its government," Australian Foreign Minister Bob Carr was quoted by AFP news agency as saying. "And if reports are to be believed, he worked for one of its intelligence services. That's not something I can deny or confirm. You can draw your own conclusions." Australian media have alleged that Mr Zygier changed his name several times and obtained numerous passports, which he used to do work for Mossad in Europe and the Middle East.

The ministry report however said: "There was no suggestion at the time or subsequently that Mr Zygier was involved in this misuse or that he obtained his passports fraudulently. "But if media reports prove to be true that Mr Zygier used his passport in the service of Israeli intelligence, this would raise significant questions about the appropriateness of this activity." Australia has previously complained to Israel about misuse of its passports. In 2010 it rebuked Israel after faked Australian passports were used in the assassination of a senior Hamas official in Dubai that year.

And since after Arab Invasion, The language of Iranians, Farsi became Arabized, Arabs can understand it, more or less. So he could be an Arab or Afghan.
