Radioactive contamination spreading within Hanford plant
Radioactive contamination is spreading within one of Hanfordā€™s huge processing plants, and the problem could escalate as the plant, unused since the 1960s, continues to deteriorate.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Nothing to see here folks, don't worry Obama will surely raise the safety levels before he leaves office, then all that radioactive cancer will just magically go away.

It's confined to the building. And even if it were to get out it is low grade radioactive material now. Comparatively safe.

Or Republicans will get rid of safety standards all together, then it's no one's fault. Hope you have healthcare. Oh, you might not be covered according to Paul Ryan.

Might I suggest you learn some physics. There are only a few isotopes that are truly dangerous. They are the ones with really short half lives. The shorter the half life, the more gamma radiation they emit. Gamma radiation is the killer. Strontium 90 is probably the most dangerous isotope still extant at the plant. It has a half life of 28 years so it is possible there is still some there. The rest of the supply has degraded to the daughter element yttrium 90 (which will be long gone by now as it has a half life of a few days) and finally zirconium 90 which is stable.

Ok so add the fact of every state has a nuke plant leaking, take all the bs stuffed underground in NM... which has had leaks, take the fact they've actually don't tell us the truth.

But ok so you think it is low. Can't prove that to me where Fukushima is concerned , and it's already proven that kids in Cali. are getting a high rate of thyroid cancers.

REDOX was used from 1952-67 to process about 24,000 tons of irradiated uranium fuel rods to remove plutonium for the nationā€™s nuclear weapons program and also to recover uranium to reuse in new fuel rods. It is highly contaminated, after processing eight times more fuel per day than earlier processing plants.

Interview with nuclear engineer Hiroaki Koide (translation by Prof. Robert Stolz, transcription by Akiko Anson), published Mar 8, 2016 (emphasis added):

  • Now, strontium-90 [Sr-90] has been leaking from Fukushima into the ocean, so it will eventually reach the United States, especially the west coast. This much we are sure ofā€¦ it is the masses of people who need to realize the impact of the contamination on them. In the case of the Fukushima disaster, for example, they need to be aware that some radioactive material is reaching the North American coast, and the prevailing westerly winds will carry anything released into the atmosphere to the USā€¦
  • While we are not really sure [how much radioactive material has leaked from Fukushima] we do know that a portion of this material will ride the prevailing winds across the Pacific Ocean. On the other hand, closer to the ground, the winds will be east, south, and north, and therefore this other portion will fall on Japanā€•and we can investigate the actual levels here: how much fell on this town, on this prefecture? Adding these up, it seems to be only 2.4 PBq. Which is to say of the total fifteen PBq, 2.4, or roughly only 16%, fell on Japanese soil. If the totals are higher, still a smaller share of the total contamination will have fallen on Japan compared with the Pacific, with the largest portion falling on the west coast of the United States.
  • So why donā€™t we hear complaints from the US? Why are there no calls for compensation? Whenever someone asks me this, I simply say that there just arenā€™t any

And, so long as you don't ingest it you won't have a problem. Dude, the level of hysteria you are demonstrating is dumb. Learn some physics. The most dangerous time to be around a nuclear accident is the first month and a half. During that time the reactor is cranking out gamma radiation like it's going out of style. Anybody exposed to that for more than a few minutes (if they are within a hundred yards) or an hour or two (if they are a mile away or so) is toast. It is death, no save.

After that first month though and highly dangerous isotopes have degraded to the daughter elements and those will peter out very fast as well. Then you are left with the relatively benign isotopes with half lives measured in centuries and millenia. They are so safe that their danger comes as a heavy metal poison and not the radiation that they slowly tick off.

Maybe GREEN PEACE can get it through your doubts

The lives of hundreds of thousands of people continue to be affected by the Fukushima nuclear disaster, especially the 160,000 who fled their homes because of radioactive contamination, and continue to live in limbo without fair, just, and timely compensation. They have only a false hope of returning home, yet the Japanese government is eagerly pushing to restart reactors, against the will of its people, and without learning true lessons from Fukushima.

this would fall under the department of energy's jurisdiction the same federal department that Republicans want to cut funding too and who Trump appointed Rick Perry as the head of, the same guy who said repeatedly says he wants too abolish it.

So clean it up yourself, because the orange fuhrer could give a shit if there is nuclear waste in your drinking water. Dont like it move somewhere else, whats the matter? too poor to move to a new town at a moments notice? too bad... shouldve thought of that before being all gross and poor, stupid peasant

That report is false as well. The Fukushima disaster released between .01 and 1.0 PBq.
