Russia meteor..awesome

Define 'huge'...Something the size of a footbal field just explodes in the upper atmosphere. The friction is too severe to stay intact. Somewhere between 'football field' sized, and 'moon' sized, a meteor would make it to the surface intact.

That is the physics theory anyway. There is not much hard data on this stuff.

I do wonder what kind of devastation an impact such as that would have...

Nasa said this one would have wiped out 800 sq miles.

Spooky stuff
Wow!!!!!!

We had one graze by us in 1972.

1972 Great Daylight Fireball - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Analysis of its appearance and trajectory showed it was a meteoroid about 3 metres (9.8 ft) in diameter, if a carbonaceous chondrite, to 14 metres (46 ft), if made of cometary ices.[3][4] It was in the Apollo asteroid class in an Earth-crossing orbit that would make a subsequent close approach to Earth in August 1997.[2] In 1994, Czech astronomer Zdenek Ceplecha re-analysed the data and suggested the passage would have reduced the meteoroid's mass to about a third or half of its original mass (reducing its diameter to 2 to 10 metres (6 ft 7 in to 32 ft 10 in).[3]

The meteoroid's 100-second passage through the atmosphere reduced its velocity by about 800 metres per second (2,600 ft/s) and the whole encounter significantly changed its orbital inclination from 15 degrees to 8 degrees.[4]

The US19720810 meteoroid is described in the preface of the first chapter of Arthur C. Clarke's The Hammer of God.

I guess we should be thankful that Obama is our president.
He saved us all from total destruction.

Friggin Bush this is his fault.

BBC News - Russia sends clean-up team to meteorite-hit Urals

The divers could not find it. Not a big suprise. At that speed, it is probably buried 30 feet down in the muck.

(Barring any real data, I am going to go with the 'one telephone pole deep' theory of small meteor penetration depth in a mucky lake bottom.)

What would happen if a large object hit the Earth?

3.0 km 1 million 60 Large nations destroyed, widespread
fires from ejecta, climate change.

7.0 km 50 million 125 Mass extinction, global conflagration,
long term climate change.

16 km 200 million 250 Large mass extinction.

The K-T extinction event was caused by an impact that created a 180 km crater. Compare that to the table above.

I had better dig that underground bunker a little deeper & stock it with a few years worth of food. I don't have enough money to hide out on the space station.

Tunguska event - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We just had a smaller meteor this time.

Heck of a coincidence it was in Russia...chuckle
That's what I've been thinking. Why does Russia seem to be the strike zone for these things?

Pondering Russia's recent history I can't help feeling sorry for them: Tyranny, political oppression, their Revolution, more oppression, WW-II devastation, Tunguska, now this.

One calamitous, punishing event after another. They seem inured to it and just keep plodding along, unperturbed, as if it's expected.

Congecture. There is no data available to support the numbers.

There is nothing wrong with conjecture. Sometimes conjecture is all we have. As long as everyone knows the numbers are made up.

Looks just like a missile coming in and exploding midair

There was a time this would have provoked a nuclear response

lol when I first heard this story I said, Are they sure that wasn't just North Korea messing around with another "test"...? yikes!

This is really cool because it is the only video of a meteor breaking into pieces, on multiple cameras....with sound. Notice the dual vapor trails after the explosion. The estimates were the original meteor was in the ten to twenty ton range, but only a few hundred pounds made it to the surface. Everything else was vaporized. At 30km/second...shit happens.

Various videos at;

Videos: Meteor lights up Russian skies; Update: Injuries now up over 900 « Hot Air

Ten to twenty ton range and the people we pay to monitor the sky didn't see it? It would have been awesome enough if it landed in Times Square.

There's plenty of data. We have been witness to thousands of impacts both on our planet as well as others. On top of that we have thousands of craters on earth to study.

So you can open a catalog of measured meteors and their corresponding impact craters.

Where did the 1.7 km one land?
