Senators Reach Deal on Student Loans
AP ^ | 07.17.13 | By PHILIP ELLIOTT Associated Press

Heading off a costly increase for returning college students, a bipartisan group of senators reached a deal Wednesday that would offer students better rates on their loans this fall but perhaps assign higher rates in coming years.

The deal would offer students lower interest rates through the 2015 academic year, but then rates were expected to climb above where they were when students left campus this spring. The interest rates would be linked to the financial markets, but Democrats won a protection for students that rates would never climb higher than 8.25 percent for undergraduate students. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

This is good as education is very important in keeping our country a first world nation. ;) I wish these rates would go down.

10.5% Student rates for parents?
What a bunch of fucking criminals. Congress is totally inept

It is great news for colleges that will be able to continue to charge their exorbitant rates

Low interest rates and the excess of money available through federal loans it was has driven up the cost of a college education. Rates need to go up and Congress has to cut back on the money the federal government will lend out in the form of Stafford Loans. College enrollment needs to drop in order for the prices to come down.

We don't want less people becoming educated. A first world nation can only raise its standards of living through education or increase exist to work.

I was watching CNN a few month ago and a country like Norway or was it Germany has a system of internship. ;) This maybe a option? Or how about craftsmen schools for construction, electrical, carpertarty. I think it is a bad think to want to reduce our protentional to compete with the rest of the world.

Competition could drop the prices?

Or just stop giving loans to non-STEM fields. If you want a BA in history or gender studies or some other fluffy degree with no chance to pay it back on minimum wage you'll make with those degrees, then you figure out how to pay for it.

Why do you assume that throwing away $80k on a four year university is the only way to become more educated? We already have a saturation of Bachelor's degrees in this country. Many of them can't find jobs. People with Master's degrees are working entry level jobs. We don't need more "educated" people; we need more skilled people.

I've been making a case for internship for a long time. Experience is more highly valued in the corporate world than a college degree. And yes, like I said before, we need more skilled people: electricians, plumbers, auto mechanics, all jobs that pay very well and don't require overly costly university educations.

Competition could drop the prices?

As long as universities know students can just keep borrowing more and more and more from the government there is no mechanism in place to control their out of control costs from continuing to spiral. Student loan debt has already surpassed $1 trillion and the increase in defaults has already begun.

$100,000 plus for the service universities are delivering is outrageous. Replace them with nationally accredited Internet courses and watch them beg for students.

The internet course make a lot of sense. ;) Knowledge should be easy to gain. :eusa_angel:

You want a Freshman English, Psych, Economics or whatever course you pay $200 for an Internet course and the credit is accepted anywhere. Why pay a major university $4000 a course to sit in a lecture hall with 250 other students?

We have more college degrees and less education. We see it every day on this very board. Students come out with majors in "Gender Studies" and other exercises in political activism. They can't read. They can't write. They can't reason. That isn't education.
Way too many people are going to college and coming out totally unprepared for the world. Slapping them with 80k in debt is almost criminal.

Cheap internet colleges, internships, craft-schools that focus on electrical, construction, etc. These are some of the improvements would could have.

Things like Gender studies and shit shouldn't get loans. Only science, business(MBA), economics, medical, etc should be allowed the loans. Serious subjects.

I think the internet classes are opening up education to more and more people. ;) Allowing someone to remain stupid or to work at a labor ready to get through life is a mistake. :cuckoo:

Only Foreign Banks deserve 0% Interest Rate Loans from the Fed. Besides, there's no better way to keep the average American as a Debt Slave than with High Interest Rates on Student Loans for Degrees that will never get them Jobs that pay enough to pay off ANY Student Loan! Haha!

Americans: Suckers!

Let's all chant together: USA! USA! USA!

The big difference between a first and third world country is how educate the populations are. :eusa_hand: We need to figure out how to lower the cost of our educational system.

You realize that his about getting Democrats reelected, right? Pay close attention to the time-table. Anyone thinking that anyone of these clowns is trying to help students needs to go back to school and learn how to observe and think.
