Should we respect Islam like Obama does?

First of all, the PLO. It's more specific than just "infidels" it mentions how it wants to eradicate the Jews. You can take a look at Iran and its holding a man who converted to Christianity from Islam for execution. Pakistani law mandates that "blasphemies" of the Qur'an are to be met with punishment. In Sudan, it is estimated that over 1.5 million Christians have been killed by the Janjaweed, the Sudanese Arab Muslim militia, and even suspected Islamists in northern Sudan since 1984. You can look up the case of Abdul Rahman, in Afghanistan.
None of those (with the exception of the PLO - who's hatred of the Jewish state is political, not religious) are examples of Muslims "states" encouraging "killing the infidels".

The very concept of Sharia Law is that there is no other god but Allah, meaning that I am an infidel, and you are an infidel. How many countries in our world practice Sharia Law, Doc?

No, the "very concept" of Sharia is a collection of religious law. Not "there is no other god but Allah".

According to Islam, I'm not an "infidel" (because I'm Jewish) - and neither are you, if you're a Christian. We are "people of the Book", or Ahl al-kitab.

There is no "Sharia" legal system in the world that allows for killing of "infidels".

You cannot back that up with your own facts. They encourage that anyone openly practicing their faith in public be jailed or killed. This is something you cannot deny. You sit there saying "There are no Muslim states who encourage the death of infidels." But you see not the ruthless persecution of Christians and Jews in the middle east. The Palestinian hatred of the Jews is not political, it's historical, religious, and motivated by the teachings of the Qur'an.

"The punishment by death in the case of Apostasy has been unanimously agreed upon by all the four schools of Islamic jurisprudence."

-Abdur Rahman I. Doi, Shari`ah: The Islamic Law

In the Hadith:

"It is reported by `Abaas ... that the messenger of Allah ... said, `Whosoever changes his religion (from Islam to any other faith), kill him."

You know that every "Muslim state" in the world has a codified legal system, right?

You keep talking about Sharia as some religious idea to avoid the actual topic of what we are talking about - Sharia as a codified legal system in "Muslim States".

There is no Muslim State in the world with a legal system where "killing the infidels" is legal. If I were to go to Saudi Arabia, and be murdered in the street, the person who did it would go to prison. Same with any other "Muslim state" in the world.

Contrary to what has been told us, Islam may be the most sterile philosophy to have captured the mind of man. No other philosophy so thoroughly destroys whatever people it has gotten a grip on. Once Islam is firmly in control, the society not only halts in its progress, but actively devolves.
...
Whatever the faults of Communism, at least Marxists respected science, and could produce it. Maybe not at the same rates of the Capitalist West, but at some rate.

Whatever the faults of Catholicism, it respected intellect, and could produce world -class universities The Jesuits educated whole nations, maybe with a bias; but one could think logically after a Jesuit education.

Whatever the faults of Protestant fundamentalism, it allowed for enough dissent that a divergence of thought and creativity could prosper.

Buddhism and Hinduism have their flaws; but they could produce math, art, and music.

Even enslaved pagan Africans could create music and art. Jazz and Samba came out of the slave experience.
...
Islam produces almost nothing, but claims to have produced everything. At best, it borrows and transmits the genius of others. Usually, it plagiarizes and corrupts what it steals. Eventually, it destroys whatever it touches.
...
Our Western governments have to stop coddling the Muslims and telling them how respectable Islam is. Tell the truth. Without oil, Islam would be still be in the seventh century. If the Islamists have their way, they will revert there soon enough.

Like each of the three Abrahamic faiths, products of a jealous god - Islam contains the potential for great good and great evil; for peace and for bloodshed; for love and for hate.

It is no different than any other faith - it's all in what sects gain control of the message and what they choose to take out of it.

The particular type of Islam that is problematic is the most conservative interpretation of it.

Sort of...but remember Lysenko?

Agree...but then, you had the idea of women as intrinsically evil, and the Magdelene laundries for salvation.

Whatever the faults of Protestant fundamentalism, it allowed for enough dissent that a divergence of thought and creativity could prosper.

Yet here we are fighting the forced teaching of creationism in our classrooms in lieu of science. So much for creativity and dissent.

Buddhism and Hinduism have their flaws; but they could produce math, art, and music.

...and Suti....the burning alive of widowed women, and the marginalization of widows without sons, forced into starvation, isolation, and classlessness non persons...the horrible conditions and treatment of the "untouchable" class.

True dat. Yet, those very pagan Africans sold each other to slavers and mutilated their women's genitals.

Or, maybe not. Maybe it's just how you choose to see it. Islam certainly gave much to civilization:

Thank goodness our western governments refuse to kow tow to bigotry. Perhaps they've learned a lesson from Nazi Germany and what can happen when a whole people are villified and dehumanized.

I'm proud of our country for fighting this hate!

"Government under God. In those Muslim countries where Islam is the official religion listed in the constitution, sharia is declared to be a source, or the source, of the laws. Examples include Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates, where the governments derive their legitimacy from Islam. In Pakistan, Iran, and Iraq, among others, it is also forbidden to enact legislation that is antithetical to Islam." Link

Just look how far to the right the republican party has moved since Bush spoke those words.

But they all read the same Qur'an right? Do they not read the these too?

Quran 5:17 “Infidels are those who declare God is the Christ, son of Mary."

Qur'an 5:73 "They are surely disbelievers who blaspheme and say: 'God is one of three in the Trinity for there is no Ilah (God) except One, Allah. If they desist not from saying this (blasphemy), verily a grievous penalty will befall them - the disbelievers will suffer a painful doom."

Tabari 9:69 "Killing disbelievers is a small matter to us."

And in those codified systems there are elements of Shari'a Law. In Egypt, the people willingly elected the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, whose main goal is to wipe Israel and the US out of existence.

"The Brotherhood calls for jihad against “the Muslim’s real enemies, not only Israel but also the United States. Waging jihad against both of these infidels is a commandment of Allah that cannot be disregarded."

--Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide Muhammed Badi, Sept. 2010

Muslim Brotherhood Supreme Guide: 'The U.S. Is Now Experiencing the Beginning of Its End'; Improvement and Change in the Muslim World 'Can Only Be Attained Through Jihad and Sacrifice'

And then lets not forget the killing of two Coptic Christians by the Egyptian Army on Oct 9 of last year. Then we have the Grand Mufti of Egypt Sheikh Ali Gomaa, referring to all Christians as "infidels"

I have presented my facts, you can merely throw up strawmen.

I don't think that being respectful to all people in general can be construed as respecting Islam.

the respect that Obama has given Islam is only a one-way street...

they certainly don't respect other religions.....they are killing them in most Muslim countries...

Most of Europe became Christian through sword and fire. All religions seem to do crazy things at some point or another. The word of God seems to be interpreted differently often.

The three main Abrahamic religions are the only ones who rely on the written word. They all have used that word to justify evil.

A religion should not be blamed for the acts of people who choose to interpret it in it's worst light.

I see it kind of like the gun issue. Guns themselves aren't the problem. It's those that choose to misuse them.

True, christianity was defanged and declawed because of the enlightenment

I read often of Christians being slaughtered in the streets in muslim countries including Saudi Arabia and Egypt. I don't ready about any one going to jail for it though. Which planet to you reside upon?

You are horribly mistaken if you think I'm defending the incredibly corrupt and autocratic governments of some Muslim countries. Both Saudi Arabia and Egypt have laws against "killing infidels" though.

My point was simple:

There is no Muslim country where it is legal or encouraged to "kill the infidels".

it may not be technically "legal" but it happens anyway in almost every Muslim country....besides...the supreme law of the Koran commands/encourages it....
