Shutdown is threatening food stamps

America survived all the way into the mid 1960's without the Food Stamp Program, and we'll survive is the end of it.

President Trump would like to continue it, but Chuck and Nancy refuse to send him an acceptable budget.

The ball is in their court
There is no express wall building clause. Government should not be shut down over this.

not yet, food stamp recipients have received their Jan and Feb allotments. That's why Chuck and Nancy need to act promptly to move on this, and come up with an ACCEPTABLE budget. President Trump has made it clear, a budget without a wall is a non-starter.

Trump made an offer this past weekend to help those two save face. Why doesn't Nancy let the House vote on it? See what the rank and file think about it?

Eligibility[edit]
Because SNAP is a means-tested program, recipients must meet all eligibility criteria in order to receive benefits. There are income and resource requirements for SNAP, as well as specific requirements for immigrants, elderly persons and persons with disabilities.[21][22]

Income requirements[edit]
For income, individuals and households may qualify for benefits if they earn a gross monthly income that is 130% (or less) of the federal poverty level for a specific household size. For example: the SNAP-eligible gross monthly income is $1,245 or less for an individual. For a household of 4, the SNAP eligible gross monthly income is $2,552 or less. Gross monthly income is the amount an individual makes each month before any deductions, i.e. taxes, insurance, pensions, etc.[21]

Not to mention the fact that many elderly are not getting the help THEY need.

My son's mother in law lives in a low income retirement home.

They are not getting their housing allotment OR their food stamps.

so maybe I can admit that I was wrong about how bad the government shutdown really is
NPR

canwe really allow these poor people to starve to death over this?

She looks like the epitome of government waste and overspending.

They didn't miss any food stamps yet. Food stamp recipients have received their Jan and Fed allotments already.

Ms. Pelosi just needs to put the President's proposal up for a vote. I know she's against it- but some of her party members might think its a good deal they want to go for.

Get the whole House on the record on the Trump Deal.

Judy Woodruff:

With the government shutdown now in its 27th day, many federal programs have been affected, including food stamps.

So far, there is no major lapse in benefits used by nearly 39 million people each month. That's because of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It found a way to pay SNAP benefits, as they are called, earlier than normal.

February benefits, awarded through a debit-style card used at stores, are being paid out this week. Several states, including California and Florida, are warning users to be careful and make sure they manage to make the money last longer.

For 2,500 retailers, the problem is already here. That's because those stores needed to renew a license for the Electronic Benefit Transfer, or EBT debit card program, and they failed to meet a deadline before the shutdown. Those renewals, required every five years, are on hold.

The real question IMHO, is why doesn't Nancy allow the President plan come up to a free vote in the House? Let the rank and file representatives vote as to whether they want the government reopened and appropriate border security provided?

I remember Dodd/Frank. Lots of fun. No sympathy. And Obamacare. Don't get me started. Complaining and begging the progressive socialist politicians about the penalty and the massive increases for many in their medical packages. Obama and Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi said not a word. And get this. With much higher deductibles. Good times! Good times!

That does cast her, instead of her party, as the blockage. I often wonder why party leaders refuse to even allow a vote on things. Maybe they're afraid of going on the record.

There is no express wall building power. Government should not be shut down over any implied power.
