Democrats know how to play the game. Around 2006 democrats and republicans were well aware of Mark Foley's problems but republicans were stuck. They couldn't fire a gay representative or risk the wrath of liberals. Democrats waited until the GOP couldn't possibly come up with a candidate in time for the election and they suddenly became outraged by Foley's gayness. Republicans (as usual) were embarrassed and Foley was dumped. Democrats won the seat easily.

Both men are unfit for office. If you hold the public trust and break the law, get out. These people are paid too much and given too much freedom to break the laws they write. Ignorance of the law isn't an argument a regular citizen is allowed to make, and if you're a law maker breaking a law should be twice have twice as harsh consequences.
