I don't recall anyone disputing that barriers at ports of entry would make illegal entry harder. It may be that the dems have offered him something he can claim is a beginning of a bigger barrier. After Trump blew up the continuing resolution senate deal, it seemed to me the dems wanted to deny even this face saving to Trump, but .... compromise is how American govt works because the Founders set it up that way.He said something interesting right at the beginning: that the Democrats had finally admitted that barriers are an important part of border security. A bipartisan group is being convened to review information on what works and what is needed, supplied by experts in the field. The committee has three weeks (Feb 15) and if they have not come up with an acceptable plan by then, he will invoke a national emergency.
Doesn't sound like much of a "cave" to me. I am hopeful that this will work.
Oh, another comment of interest was that the tentative agreement will include improved and heightened drug-detection equipment at the customs crossing points. He said they are greatly outdated. So maybe they will actually be able to stop some of the drug flow into the country. A lot comes in on ships, though, and they'll never be able to catch it all.

I agree with you about shutting down the government as a negotiating tool and declaring a national emergency over this. Shutting down the government is not the way political agendas are accomplished in this nation. Autocracies maybe, but not in a nation with three coequal branches of government. Shutting down the government is not the way to advance legislation either. And neither is declaring a National Emergency when no such emergency exists.
When a Democrat once again sits in the Oval Office, would it be appropriate to declare gun violence a National Emergency? Climate change? Wealth disparity? These three issues pose a much more dire and immediate threat to national security. A couple thousand foot sore Guatemalans can't threaten the security of the United States anymore than the Kiwanis or the Rotary Clubs can.
