This year 91 percent of teachers used some of their own money to pay for school supplies, and 38 percent used only their own money, according to a new report from The NPD Group.

The report, "Today's Teachers: School Supply Purchasing Dynamics and Behaviors," surveyed almost 1,000 K-12 public and private school teachers in the United States about their purchasing behaviors. The online survey was conducted in February 2015.

Where my son goes to school the community raises funds to help teachers, plus when buying supplies for your own kids there is extra bought by request for those kids having problems obtaining supplies needed....I can remember as a kid the school I went to in elementary used to charge a tuition fee...to keep out unwanted people..In football we would have fund raisers to help the poor kids at black schools buy football equipment so they had a chance to play....But laws were changed and all schools were funded equally...

Take P.S. 132 in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City where the children's toilets are decrepit, old, and overflowing with waste. I don't see how this has anything to do with race relations but whatever.

On a side note. I think it is shameful that many teachers ( including myself when I worked in a public school ) have to pay for school supplies. Government always has money to spend on unnecessary wars but never enough to spend on educating our youth and making sure they have top notch education. There was a time where America was # 1 in education. That was when the government was pouring money into education.
