For decades after the founding of the tiny (8,000 sq. mi.) state of Israel on May 15, 1948, there was an almost unanimous misconception that if only the Jewish State ceased to exist, peace and quiet would reign over the oil-rich Middle East and North Africa. This post-World War I Islamic arena was artificially structured by the victorious British and French, who partitioned this gigantic land mass, previously under the domain of the Turkish Ottoman Empire, which had surrendered along with the Germans and Hungarians on November 11, 1918.
While the British and French leadership partitioned this huge land mass, even before oil became the indispensable resource in the 1920's, both the two major victorious allies hoped to retain political control through potentates placed on the thrones of these artificial fiefdoms, whom they hoped would do their bidding.
With the remnants of the British Empire hoping to control the artificial states of Saudi Arabia, and neighboring states, such as Yemen, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait, the French, never a factor in this formerly Ottoman controlled area, had to be satisfied with Syria and Lebanon. No attention was paid to the long simmering confrontation between the Sunnis and the Shias. Over simplified, the Sunnis believe that the Prophet Muhammad was the founder and progenitor of a new global religion that would rule the world, as written in the Koran, interpreting the word of the Moslem God, Allah.
The Shias, also swearing total allegiance to Allah, and his word, as written in the Koran, are still awaiting the “Mahdi,” who will emerge to lead the true followers to a Shia-interpreted promised land. This is when the Allah’s Messiah will bring humanity to all the world’s occupants; in which Christians, Jews, Hindus, etc. would be considered “dhimmis,” or highly taxed, second class citizens, unless they converted.
