Western/European cultures traditionally did it backwards...in OUR culture (not anymore thankfully) the BRIDE'S family was obligated to pay her HUSBAND for taking her! It's called a "dowry" and brides were chosen on the strength of their dowries.

I don't think it's a dowry if you're paying the bride's family...it's a dowry when her family pays YOU to take her away.

When you pay, it's a bride price.
