That really is an extremely ignorant response.

The idea here as the OP stated was having a gun to "protect himself". That doesn't mean the intent was to automatically fire the gun, although that may have been the outcome. Just the act of pulling the gun out and pointing it at the attackers could have stopped the attack in it's tracks.
If not, he may indeed have had to take the next step and fire the weapon in order to stop the attack.
Sounds like though, you would have rather the victim been beaten for no reason.
