Bottom line first?

OK....there is no such thing as a modern industrialized society in which everyone can or will be materially, or in any other way, "equal."

It is one of most basic of Leftist lies.
("Lie" means that they know it is untrue, yet advance same for their gain.)

Try to accomplish "equality" and you wind up with a society in which more folks are on food stamps than are gainfully employed in full time jobs.

Oh...wait....."Latest Obama Outrage: More People on Food Stamps Than Working Full Time" http://www.marketoracle.co.uk/Article41331.html

1. Hegel’s complaint about the flaw in “abstract thinking”: it cannot conceive of a handsome murderer.
Or a fluent, well-spoken liar?
And that brings us to the intellectuals.

One of their gifts that allows them to be opinion-makers is that they are glib, having a smooth fluency that makes what they say seem natural, even true.

2. Perhaps 'liar' is too strong a word. Perhaps, instead, there are certain possibilities that the intelligentsia cannot even acknowledge as possibilities, because doing so would risk their entire world-vision. And, of course, they cannot conceive of same as possibilities, well then, how could they try to test them empirically?

a. Foremost among the fearful propositions is one that explains the disparity of income and wealth among people.

What is the basis of the 'wall of separation' in the minds of intellectuals between inequality of wealth and income, and the following inequalities: crime, violence, alcohol intake, and other social pathologies. Could it be that there is, actually, no separation, and all related, as causes and as results?

3. Let's say that group 'X' has higher income or higher some other achievements than group 'Y." Intellectuals tend to transform that fact into this: group "X's" good fortune is, in reality, group "Y's" grievance!

a. In viewing society through this magic prism, intellectuals are able to produce the scenario by which group "X" has acquired its wealth by taking it from group "Y"!

OK...here is where the glib use terms like "exploitation," or "profiteering," or "fraud" as the explanation for the economic disparity.

It seems that "X" took "Y's" resources!

b. Where is the consideration of the fact that there is no evidence that "Y" was better off before "X" arrived?

c. Or consideration of evidence that "Y" became demonstrably worse off after "X" left the vacinity?

d. And, while there is no evidence of "X" made "Y" poorer, there is often actual evidence that "X's" presence kept "Y" from being even poorer....and this is disregarded.

4. Imagine if one accepted the possibility that one group might just be higher achievers than another!! Why, the very idea would fly in the face of a view that all folks are actually equal, the same, veritable duplicates.

And make no mistake, that is the essence of Liberalism. But to consider that the lagging group simply has to work harder....well, if you tell them that, why would they vote for you?
Or make you into their 'golden calf'?

a. Further, it deprives the intelligentsia of the fable that they are fighting on the side of the angels, and against the forces of evil.
The above based on chapter four of Thomas Sowell's "Intellectuals and Race."

5. An actual example? Sure...Michael Ornstein's "Ethno-Racial Inequality in the City of Toronto" claimed that "the Japanese are among the most privileged groups in the city" because they were more successful economically that either other minorities there, or the white majority.
http://www.isr.yorku.ca/download/Ornstein--Ethno-Racial_Groups_in_Toronto_1971-2001.pdf

What makes this a stunning example of Liberal intelligentsia insanity is the facts of the documented history of anti-Japanese discrimination in Canada, including the fact that people of Japanese ancestry were interned during WWII even longer than the American Japanese were.
Young and Reid, "The Japanese Canadians," pp. 9-10, 49-76, 120-145.

Watch very carefully when the elites change "achievement" into "privilege." What it does is blame the higher achieving groups for the fact that other groups are lower achievers.

Bottom line first?

OK....there is no such thing as a modern industrialized society in which everyone can or will be materially, or in any other way, "equal."

Equality is a fabrication.....a fallacy.
Wise up.

Everyone has equal rights under the law, however not everyone has equal access to the law. Furthermore not everyone has equal opportunities.

The Founding Fathers understood these disparities and attempted to make allowances for them. Public education and public libraries were two of the programs they advocated to reduce these disparities.

What we have today is an even greater "equalizer" than has ever existed before in the history of mankind. Anyone who can access the internet now has equal access to all of the information therein. Already this "equalizer" has played a significant role in the "Arab Spring". It spread the news of the original injustice that triggered everything and then played a role in the subsequent overthrows.

Granted that there are still those without access to the internet just as there are those who are still deprived of an education in 3rd world nations.

However the internet is now a force that politicians and the power elites are struggling to come to grips with. If a corporation or a school does something stupid it can go viral and then society is alerted that there is an "injustice" of some kind that needs to be remedied. This kind of attention was sparse when the only means of distributing information about these instances was controlled via the media. Today it is not only in the hands of the people but the outcome can often be determined just by the attention that it garners. What before might have been "swept under the rug" is now a matter of public record in seconds.

So when it comes to being "equal" nowadays those with all of the power and wealth no longer control the flow of information. That power has been transferred into the hands of the people. Exactly how this will alter the dynamics of society in the long run remains to be seen. But whenever knowledge is made widely available there tends to be an overall improvement in the lives of ordinary people.

Full equality is probably never going to become a reality but society is moving closer as more people gain "equal access" to information.

Thanks for the opportunity to give my 2 cents worth on this topic, PC. I yield the soapbox back to you. :D

Time to Step Up: Corporate Charity Accounted for Only 5% of Giving in 2011

The new research found that individual donors accounted for the majority of charitable donations for a total of 73%. Charitable donations from foundations and bequests ranked behind individual donations at 14% and 8%, respectively. Donations from corporations were reported to be the least giving, contributing only 5% of all charitable donations in 2011.

Despite incrementally small increases in total dollars donated in 2010 from 2011, there has been a significant decrease in “major gifts” or donations of $1 million or more. As the Hudson Institute reports, the decline seen in major gifts is reminiscent of the decrease in major gifts during the Great Depression.

During the Great Depression conservatives raised the same objections to F.D.R.’s programs. They said the economy must be left alone and it would correct itself in the long run. Commerce Secretary Harry Hopkins shot back: “People don’t eat in the long run. They eat every day.”

Riddle me this.............

Welders are in HIGH DEMAND in our area. Their pay is increasing as the demand for Good Welders is at a all time high now. So if your not making a lot of money and want to better yourself, you could go to welding school or go in as a helper and still make a lot of money, or choose to work at Walmart..........If you choose the lesser path and make less money who's fault is it? Is it the evil Corps paying top dollar for a TRADE or your own choice of jobs?

A welder is JAM UP, and another is sorry arse have to redo his work all the time type, who should the company keep. The worthless can't pass a Xray type or the one who is Jam Up.

Secondly, that Jam up welder decides to create his own business and falls flat on his butt because he's not business savy.............

To each his own, but their are OPPORTUNITIES out there, not just welders, for those willing to apply themselves to better their lives and the lives of their families. It is their choices that takes them down their own paths. Which is what America is about.

If you live in a bad employment area, where the future is glim...........................MOVE.......To where the jobs are, and STOP WHINING.

"it is crucial to conservatism that the people must literally love the order that dominates them"

The social Darwin authoritarians are out as usual infesting these threads. Must be what they do when they're not on their knees servicing the opulent.

Q: What is conservatism?
A: Conservatism is the domination of society by an aristocracy.

Q: What is wrong with conservatism?
A: Conservatism is incompatible with democracy, prosperity, and civilization in general. It is a destructive system of inequality and prejudice that is founded on deception and has no place in the modern world.

These ideas are not new. Indeed they were common sense until recently. Nowadays, though, most of the people who call themselves "conservatives" have little notion of what conservatism even is. They have been deceived by one of the great public relations campaigns of human history. Only by analyzing this deception will it become possible to revive democracy in the United States.

The Main Arguments of Conservatism

From the pharaohs of ancient Egypt to the self-regarding thugs of ancient Rome to the glorified warlords of medieval and absolutist Europe, in nearly every urbanized society throughout human history, there have been people who have tried to constitute themselves as an aristocracy. These people and their allies are the conservatives.

The tactics of conservatism vary widely by place and time. But the most central feature of conservatism is deference: a psychologically internalized attitude on the part of the common people that the aristocracy are better people than they are. Modern-day liberals often theorize that conservatives use "social issues" as a way to mask economic objectives, but this is almost backward: the true goal of conservatism is to establish an aristocracy, which is a social and psychological condition of inequality. Economic inequality and regressive taxation, while certainly welcomed by the aristocracy, are best understood as a means to their actual goal, which is simply to be aristocrats. More generally, it is crucial to conservatism that the people must literally love the order that dominates them. Of course this notion sounds bizarre to modern ears, but it is perfectly overt in the writings of leading conservative theorists such as Burke. Democracy, for them, is not about the mechanisms of voting and office-holding. In fact conservatives hold a wide variety of opinions about such secondary formal matters. For conservatives, rather, democracy is a psychological condition. People who believe that the aristocracy rightfully dominates society because of its intrinsic superiority are conservatives; democrats, by contrast, believe that they are of equal social worth. Conservatism is the antithesis of democracy. This has been true for thousands of years.

The defenders of aristocracy represent aristocracy as a natural phenomenon, but in reality it is the most artificial thing on earth. Although one of the goals of every aristocracy is to make its preferred social order seem permanent and timeless, in reality conservatism must be reinvented in every generation. This is true for many reasons, including internal conflicts among the aristocrats; institutional shifts due to climate, markets, or warfare; and ideological gains and losses in the perpetual struggle against democracy. In some societies the aristocracy is rigid, closed, and stratified, while in others it is more of an aspiration among various fluid and factionalized groups. The situation in the United States right now is toward the latter end of the spectrum. A main goal in life of all aristocrats, however, is to pass on their positions of privilege to their children, and many of the aspiring aristocrats of the United States are appointing their children to positions in government and in the archipelago of think tanks that promote conservative theories.

Conservatism in every place and time is founded on deception. The deceptions of conservatism today are especially sophisticated, simply because culture today is sufficiently democratic that the myths of earlier times will no longer suffice.

Before analyzing current-day conservatism's machinery of deception, let us outline the main arguments of conservatism. Although these arguments have changed little through history, they might seem unfamiliar to many people today, indeed even to people who claim to be conservatives. That unfamiliarity is a very recent phenomenon. Yet it is only through the classical arguments and their fallacies that we can begin to analyze how conservatism operates now.

You see that period where they put a bar labeled "the wealth gap?" That was known as "the roaring 20s." No look at the period afterwards where the so-called "wealth gap" narrowed. that was known as the Great Depression.

That doesn't seem to support your theory about the detrimental effects of the so-called "wealth gap."

Heritage Index of economic freedom:

Switzerland - 5
Denmark - 9
United States - 10
Sweden - 18
Norway - 31

GDP in terms of PPP

Norway - 3
Switzerland - 6
United States - 7
Netherlands - 11
Sweden - 15

That rankings for economic freedom seem to mirror the rankings for GDP in terms of PPP, except for Norway. However, keep in mind that Norway is the European equivalent of Kuwait. It has lots of oil wealth.

So, based on the empirical evidence, the proposition that you can have wealth or equality but not both seems to hold.

Pssstt....Friendly advice: change the Cicero quote to this one-

“The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed lest Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.” Cicero 55 BC

The only Equality that matters is Equality under the Rule of Law. But as we no longer have a Rule of Law, that is quite impossible.

And here we have the Obama Administration advocating for lower standards of educations for minorities (except for Asians):

According to Alabama’s new education standards, black students will not be expected to do as well as white ones in public schools. The WSJ reports:

“Beginning this fall, Alabama public schools will be under a new state-created academic accountability system that sets different goals for students in math and reading based on their race, economic status, ability to speak English and disabilities.” Alabama’s Plan 2020 “sets a different standard for students in each of several subgroups — American Indian, Asian/Pacific islander, black, English language learners, Hispanic, multirace, poverty, special education and white.”

In other words, minority students will need to meet lower expectations, while white students (and Asians) will be expected to reach higher proficiency levels.

This practice is not new. In an effort to escape the No Child Left Behind Act’s stringent standards for schools, a number of states applied for a waiver, which would allow states to keep federal funding if their schools met a limited number of benchmarks. Of the 33 states granted a waiver last year, 27 now have different achievement goals for different groups of students. And the Obama administration fully supports this measure, “as long as the low-performing students are required to make greater rates of progress, so that the gap between struggling students and high-achieving students is cut in half over six years.”

This will definitely ensure Unequal Outcomes...with minority students (except Asians) being given social promotions and remaining illiterate.
