The Gaia Hypothesis (that the whole Earth is a living organism)

Since it's only a hypothesis, thought this would better be put here since there's some new agey sorta stuff involved moreso than concrete science.

Was actually googling for something about the universe itself being alive somehow (Mega Gaia hehe) but found this and thought it'd make an enjoyable discussion thread.

I've always figured the Earth, its peoples, animals, plants and trees, everything was all 1 living being since all matter 'touches' all other matter, or at least is seperated by the same atomic distance which is nearly nil. The atoms making up our bodies don't physically touch, but then neither do the atoms of our feet touching the atoms of the ground. So in a very real sense we're all connected to each other, ergo, the Earth and everything on and in it are connected. And if some of that 'blob' of atoms is alive and sentient, then the whole thing must be.

And if even 'empty' space is composed of particles dark matter/energy then those particles touch the Earth's particles so the entire universe is alive.
