I find it funny how republicans are simultaneously telling us how they did not own slaves and that we should be republicans because Lincoln freed us from slavery 160 years ago. But you see 12 years ago this country elected it's first black president. A democrat. Barack Obama. So why should we not be members of the party of Obama? It does seem odd that some boasting of the GOP are totally blind towards the civil rights movement. In particular the timeframe beginning with Harry Truman, as inherently bigoted as he was. HIs reaction to the profound mistreatment of black war veterans upon their arrival home began to change everything. Then with Barry Goldwater's nomination in '64, his states rights conservativism pretty much completed the mass exodus of blacks from the GOP. Even stalwarts like Jackie Robinson left the party.

Luckily the GOP today isn't the GOP of my father's. Nor are Democrats the Democrats of my grandfather.
