Actually, it is quite the opposite.Sanders is not exactly extreme. In Canada he would be seen as a reasonably left wing politician, nothing more. Sanders is a sign that Democrats and independents are generally speaking getting more left wing and Hillary Clinton will likely be the last centrist Democrat nominated for president for a very long time as the demographics of the Democrats voters is shifting very rapidly, becoming more left wing in a Canadian style.
Young white Democrats and an insignificant number of non-white young people are going left while the vast majority of the party is pushing back by either staying where they are, or even moving rightward(voting for Trump)
"Progressivism" is starting to come to a halt as the browning of America is shifting the Democratic Party away from blind humanitarianism("social justice")to the Democratic Party of old(growing and maintaining existing social welfare programs that benefit the constituency).
At most the new black and brown majority of the Democratic Party will be a center-left constituency, and the Code Pinks and ELFs of the party will fade into absolute irrelevance.
