This week, sick of an opioid overdose crisis that had killed four people in his town of 30,000 since the first of January, Gloucester, Massachusetts Police Chief Leonard Campanello wanted to make certain he didn't have to investigate another one.

"We are poised to make revolutionary changes in the way we treat this disease," he wrote in a Facebook post. He wasn't kidding.

Want to end the war on drugs? Lobby your local police department. Well, what do you think guys?
Maybe it's really possible - to destroy drug spreading, if not drug dealers but private investors will lobby police interests drug traffic will be decreased?

That's a LOT of supid in one condensed post. Drug abuse isn't a disease, calling it that makes you sound like a victim.

The police department doesn't make the laws.

The police chief is appointed by the mayor and doesn't determine priorities.

The cost of letting morons fry their brains on drugs will be much higher than the so called war on drugs. Same with the war on speeding. War on murder. War on rape. etc.

Of course, but they can work better and harder! Many of them use "drug" money and after payment they close their eyes on their sponsor's crimes, but if they will receive legal money from law-abiding(i don't think that lobbyists money are legal, but) maybe they will open their eyes again.

You're a prime example of why drug laws were passed in the first place,

"War on Drugs" is yet another misnomer which has been allowed to stand for years unchallenged. As a civil society, we should all be supportive of laws which discourage abuse of illegal drugs. It is the abuse that is the priority. Granted, abuse is often tied to addiction but you can't resolve that by ignoring it or pretending it is okay. We need to have help available for those who are addicted and we do. If we need even more resources devoted to this, fine, that's what we need to do. But we can't abandon common sense.

I support complete federal decriminalization of marijuana. It has never been known to kill anyone and is a naturally-grown plant. It should simply not be a Schedule I (Class B) narcotic. Millions of people realize clear medical benefit from it and it's a natural alternative medicine for thousands of ailments. Outright legalizing it presents some problems because 'legalization' means government entanglement, regulation and taxes. Not sure how I feel about that... should government be able to tell me I can't grow a weed in my back yard?

Aside from that exception, I think we have to enforce strong laws against illegal drugs. Meth is an epidemic and it's actually becoming culturally accepted in some circles, believe it or not. College kids popping Ecstasy is as 'normal' as beer pong once was. Heroin use is at an all-time high. Not to mention the classics, Cocaine and Crack. We can't even begin to address this problem with morons running around screaming about the awful War on Drugs!

.
I guess the police administrators have figured out they can't make enough money from confiscating the private property of crack addicts to pay for the effort to confiscate the crack.

This is Massachusetts, they are practical about this kind of stuff.

Caught `em in Haiti...

DEA agents arrest members of Venezuelan president's family
Nov. 12, 2015 -- U.S. agents arrested members of the Venezuelan president's family in Haiti on charges of drug smuggling, officials said.
Agents for the Drug Enforcement Administration arrested two nephews of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife as part of a sting operation in Port-au-Prince. The two men were identified as Efrain Antonio Campo Flores and Francisco Flores Freites. Flores and Freites were caught allegedly attempting to finalize a deal to transport about 1,700 pounds of cocaine from Haiti to the United States, DEA officials said.

U.S. agents arrested members of the Venezuelan president's family Tuesday in Haiti on charges of drug smuggling, officials said.

As the two were being arrested, they openly identified themselves as the son and nephew of Venezuela's first lady, Cilia Flores, and declared they had diplomatic immunity. Both had Venezuelan diplomatic passports. Agents found no basis for their claim and transported them to New York. Both men were scheduled to appear before a federal judge Thursday. Flores was reportedly raised by the Maduro and his wife.

The two men told agents they were acting in conjuction with Venezuela's speaker of the National Assembly, Diosdado Cabello, and former Minister of the Interior, Tarck el Aissami. Cabello is considered the country's second most powerful figure, but has been the target of a U.S. drug-trafficking investigation.

You can't have a war against chemicals. It is a war against people who use non government approved (not taxed and not regulated) substances for recreational purposes.

Nov 19, 2015 -- The U.S. Coast Guard has seized more than 50,000 pounds of cocaine off Latin America during the past four months in what is shaping up to be a record year for seizures in the Pacific.
Officials on Thursday took the drugs off a ship at a port in San Diego. The drugs were seized between late July and early November. Authorities seized 66,000 pounds of cocaine and heroin during the first 10 months of the 2015 fiscal year, worth more than $1 billion.

So far, officials say they have seized 158,000 pounds of illegal drugs in fiscal year 2015 in the eastern Pacific, more than they did in the previous three years combined. Officials attribute the increase in part to having a greater presence after their operating budget was restored.

Morocco busts up ISIS linked drug ring...

Morocco Dismantles Drug Trafficking Gang Linked With ISIS
Friday 18 December 2015 - The Central Bureau of Judiciary Investigations, an arm of the Department of territory surveillance, dismantled on Friday an international drug trafficking gang, composed of four people. The criminal gang is believed to have links with the so-called Islamic State, known as ISIS.
This criminal network consists of four people, two of which are of European nationalities, according to a statement from the Ministry of Interior. Investigations found that the band which was active in drug trafficking and in money laundering in the northern cities of Nador, Al Hoceima and Tangier had ties with foreign extremists and fighters of ISIS on the Syrian-Iraqi borders.

The suspects will stand trial after completion of the investigation, supervised by the competent attorney’s office. In recent years, Morocco has been at the forefront of the global counterterrorism strategy. Its expertise in the field and its active collaboration with its European partners has played a pivotal role in thwarting an important number of terrorist attacks on European and Moroccan soils.

This strategy has taken a new dimension following the Paris terrorist attacks last November. Moroccan authorities have set up crisis cells at police headquarters of major Moroccan cities. These units are ready to receive alerts and coordinate with the General Directorate of National Security in case of a terrorist threat. According to Mustapha Khalfi, Moroccan Minister of communication and government spokesperson, Morocco dismantled 140 terrorist cells between 2002 and 2015. In addition, 15 terrorist cells were dismantled during the first 9 months of 2015.

Saudis catch some drug smugglers...

Saudi seizes five million amphetamine tablets
27 Dec.`15 - Saudi authorities said Sunday that they had seized more than five million amphetamine tablets and arrested 11 people in one of the kingdom's largest drug busts.
The suspects -- nine Saudis and two Sudanese citizens -- were arrested in Riyadh as an illegal deal was being completed, state news agency SPA quoted an interior ministry spokesman as saying.

Three grams of heroin, a machine gun and a pistol were also seized from the suspects, the spokesman said without elaborating. Drug smuggling appears to be on the rise in the ultra-conservative Muslim country despite a crackdown by the authorities.

The interior ministry announced in November that it had seized a total of 22.4 million amphetamine tablets, 28.8 tons of cannabis and 26.2 kilograms of heroin in the last Islamic calendar year, which ends in mid-October. Drug smuggling is punishable by death in the kingdom, which is governed according to a strict interpretation of Islamic law.

People who use illicit drugs should be thrown in jail and the key thrown away. They are irresponsible freaks and cost Americans billions of dollars a year.

It isn't a war, never was. I knew that calling it a war was a bad idea, because that would cause people to believe the war could be won, and the drug problem go away for good.

Drugs are a criminal problem, to be dealt with by the justice system, not the military.

Yes, that's a good point. A war has a defined enemy, purpose and desired conclusion. Drugs like murder will never completely go away and you never hear about the war on murder.
