The problem for the Dems is that their Identity Politics strategy is pitting one group against another. The Perez selection over Ellison is emblematic: Hispanics vs. Blacks. The infighting as to who gets to be Top Minority is epic. I've witnessed this on a smaller scale in Oakland for years as the Asian, Black and Hispanic political factions have made alliances and battled each other. The first two aligned to prevent Ignacio de la Fuente from being mayor (we ended up with the disastrous non-entity Ron Dellums) in 2006. Ignacio would have been a much better mayor.
